So Bryan, you suspect that there could be a different problem, i.e. a short somewhere? Implying that just because I buy a new fan does not mean my problem would necessarily be solved?

In which case, yes, would be a good idea to test things out with the AC fan sitting at home first to be sure there are no shorts.
