Have you guys seen the Car and Driver article, or this one at R&T?

Seems the car is slower, doesn't hold quite as well on the skidpad, but is faster on a track. Hum... 0-60 in 5.2 (C&D said 5.0) and 13.8 1/4 mile times. That's underwhelming, to say the least.

Engine/drivetrain stuff...

Quote
As we predicted five months ago, the latest Evo is powered by a turbocharged version of Mitsubishi's new-generation 2.0-liter inline-4, known in-house as the 4B11. While displacement remains unchanged from the 4G63 (in the Evo IX), this new aluminum-block powerplant is vastly improved. For one, it's lighter by about 27 lb., thanks to its aluminum construction. It also features Mitsubishi's variable-valve control technology (MIVEC) on both the intake and exhaust — the 4G63 had it on the intake side only.

It comes mated to either a 5-speed manual or the TC-SST, a new twin-clutch 6-speed semiautomatic transmission (more on this later). The overall result is slightly more power and torque than its predecessor with better or equal fuel economy. The turbocharged 4B11 produces 295 bhp at 6500 rpm and 300 lb.-ft. of torque at 4400.

Sounds like a winner, right? Yes, but with an asterisk.

That this engine is superior to the one it replaces is irrefutable. However, because the new Evo is about 300 lb. heavier than the outgoing model, it's a step or two slower getting to 60 mph and the quarter mile (we chose the 5-speed manual to perform our acceleration tests after Fujii informed us that the TC-SST's launch character was still not finalized). Rev the engine to 5500 rpm (limited by the launch-control mechanism), and drop the clutch. The four tires chirp and send the 3345-lb. beast on its way.

The Evo X gains momentum smoothly, almost too smoothly for hard-core forced-induction fans. Absent is the turbocharger surge that comes on at the 5000- to 6000-rpm mark. In fact, the 4G63 feels and sounds like a naturally aspirated 6-cylinder. Although the new car doesn't quite match the Evo IX's prowess in a straight line, it's quick nonetheless. It reached 60 mph in 5.2 seconds and dashed through the quarter in 13.8 sec.

Is that piece in bold there to confuse?

Yes I got the car and driver mag and I did not like what I saw. If those times are true it better be priced around the WRX not the STI. I hope the paddle shifter model will be faster.

Dam every car is getting heavy now even sports cars.

Mitsu Canada rented the Calabogie track today to showcase the new EvoX to the Cdn Mitsu dealers/rep.

One of the Suby guys is a aid to Andre Comre Picard, the driver for the Mitsu rally team and he called him saying there was a chance he would get to go. Sadly, that didn't happen, but they had 2 STI's lined up to compare, and they both couldn't make it. So, at least one of the guys loaned his 2007 for A.C.P. to beat on to compare.

Hopefully, I'll have some good second hand information to pass along about the car in the next day or two.

Aside from that it is good to know that we shiould be getting some.

Most of "us" car buffs are too cheap to buy a new Evo X though.

The mechanics are there learning to fix the wannabee's cars who AREN'T too cheap. tongue

Now, I'll have all kinds of time to talk about DSMs, because I won't be busy fixing mine!

Yep. You never know if the new engine will suffer from something as serious as the 2G crankwalk debacle...

They're not for sale yet. They're just for dealers to play with. I still haven't heard of an official release date.

Sounds like the price in the US is going up from ~$30k for last years model to ~$35k for the base. There's a bunch of information out about them now, but still no official release dates or prices. Some pretty specific stuff, but I don't know this guys source or relationship with Mitsu.

Here's what's being said:

"So, there are three models or trim versions available.

GSR (Enkei cast wheels, regular suspension, no spoiler, basic stereo, remote keyless entry, etc)

MR (TC-SST, BBS wheels, Bilstein/Eibach suspension setup, better seat material-leather/cloth, big spoiler, HIDs, still the basic stereo, no sunroof, no touch screen nav, fast key entry)

MR Premium (Same as the MR, plus Rockford stereo, 30gig hard drive, touch screen nav, sunroof)

Expected pricing hasn't been confirmed as far as they are telling us anyway, but they see it as being $45k-$55k. So probably $45k for the GSR, $50k for the MR, and $55k for the MR Premium.

No mixing or matching of spec. IE: no BBS wheels on the GSR.

Each dealer will be allotted one car at a time until all dealers have their allotment of vehicles. There will only be 500 cars in Canada for the first year. I think Markham will get eight cars as they are the top seller. Some smaller dealers will only get four or six cars.

The three cars in the pictures are in the hands of the corporate sales trainers. They were shown to the dealers at a seminar where the individual sales staff were allowed 15min each to inspect the vehicles.

The dealerships have sales binders with all the specs and info in the two binders. I was allowed private time to read through the binders. Good info there.

They expect 50% of the buyers will buy the MR, 25% GSR, and 25% MR Premiums.

They also anticipate 20% will buy black, 20% will buy grey, and 25% will buy boring silver. Then red, white, blue.

They even go so far as to give the expected profile of the buyers. Majority male buyers, late thirties to early forties, no kids, double income households of at least $110k, etc..

Some will want to know specific claimed output..291hp, 300lb ft of tq..

The five speed is quite slow as the gearing is too short in fourth and too tall in fifth.

Completely different situation for the TC-SST. Much quicker ratios and less lag time in between shifts, of course.

They expect the GSR in Feb, and the MR anytime between March and August. I see it coming sooner rather than later, but they are worried that only two plants are making the cars and Japan will get orders filled first. But they are only making one car per dealer per month. So lets say there are hypothetically 500 dealers worldwide, then they are making 500 cars per month."

Which looks better?

I'd have to go with the Subaru... Maybe it was something in the picture, the silver EVO doesn't look that bad, but the rear-end picture of the red one is HORRIBLE! Looks like a frickin' cliff, with very little to break it up.

Maybe it'll grow on me, but it doesn't look quite 'right'.

The pics of the Subaru are professional photos for an ad, while the Evo's are just a guy taking pix of the car in the garage. That seems to have something to do with it, too.

But, let's face it... it ain't about looks. With the strength of the Canadian dollar, these cars are now very affordable when buying in the US.

Looks like I'll be putting my WRX up for sale in the next little while.

Here's a Japanese language video someone posted on Evolutionm.net. Car is very flat in the corners, and it actually looks like it's lifting the inside front wheel on a couple of turns.

It didnt beat the lambo on the Track. But the lambo couldnt shake Clarkson off. As soon as the lambo pulled away a corner would come up. Eventually the Lambo spun out and thats when it ended. It was to show 180 000 super car. versus 40 000 pounds was even on a race track.

I So like the New Evo.
BUT im to into Subarus to pick it over the Evo.

There are rumors that production has been delayed due to problems with the new SST tranny. Hopefully they'll just release the 5-spd.

3500 lbs is not bad actually, considering the 2Gs were around 3400 lbs. The EVOs got side curtain airbags, knee airbags, etc.

Too bad you have to jump up to a premium stereo and nav system just to get a sunroof though!?

It's also interesting that the final drive ratios are different between the 5mt and the SST. That's going to make swapping transfer cases and rear diffs a bit of a pain down the road smile

Yay for cupholders but, WTF for that SST. I really wish they stuck with the 6MT from the last versions of MR or stick with a 5MT. And have the SST optional.

I hope some of the purist complain just like the BMW 5-series. And force Mitsubishi to offer both tranny.

I almost forgot what 2nd and reverse gear feels like.

Bahh.... Anyone who knows anything, you don't get an EVO for "comfort". It's like buying a lambo for gas mileage.

Still... I wonder how long Buschur will take to make it into the 9's. Now that they have the MIVEC Turbo, a lot of new parts are going to have to be manufactured.

I did hear that there are delays in the SST being released. Apparently, they are having issues mass-producing it, not with the actual transmission. Looks like the SST's won't be out till early summer. argh!

BMW didn't revert to offering a 6-spd in it's 5 series for the purists. They did it because their SSG transmission was garbage! Even at it's best, it did a horrible job. They have managed to improve it a bit over the years, though.

Heh. I'll wait until I see one on the lot here in Nova Scotia, Dan. *Laugh*

there will be no importing a 2008 Evo from the US. It's on the "Inadmissible" list on the RIV. From what I can figure, it's because of Canada now requiring some anti-theft system to be dealer installed. Freakin' brutal...

All the 2008 GM's are indadmissible because of this immobilizer thing too. Big scam to prevent Canadians from importing american cars and saving money! GRR.

What's worse is that they had some cars on the admissible list, and then made them inadmissible only after people got them into Canada. Those people now have a lump of metal they can't drive or sell.

I do think the manufacturers are finding ways to work around the "importability" rules and are pressuring the RIV to take things off the list to protect their higher margins in Canada.

Yup! If you think the government isn't just out to protect their rich friends, you can think again...

I mean, the FMIC-thing was bad enough, but to deny the cars into the country because they lack an ANTI-THEFT device?!? I'd think that kind of thing would be up to the owners, and how many cars on the road now don't have one?!?

I'm pretty sure that if you've already gone through the import process, they let you keep the car.

Here it be.

US pricing has STILL not been released, but they are guessing $36K?

Last years base model was just less than $30k! Wow! I guess, not that it matters now, since we can't import it.

Dan, that very article you linked to says... "U.S. pricing has not been released, but look for the GSR to sticker for around $30,000 with the MR adding a $6,000 premium to that price."

Word on the street says that Transport Canada hasn't received the final word from Mitsu about the standard equipment yet, so it defaults to inadmissible. Guess we'll see. The car will still be on sale in Canada, but my worry is that the US car ($15k cheaper) won't be allowed to be imported.

Gee, and that will make Mitsubishi SO upset that Canadians will again be forced to pay more for the same thing...
