I've been through 5 alts in 2 years now, and it's gone again. It seems like steering fluid dripped on it, so no small wonder. Question: is it possible to simply remove the alt and clean it thoroughly, or should I have it reconditioned? All thoughts appreciated.

You can clean it. Reconditioning / Rebuilding is better, though. You might also want to fabricate some kind of 'hood' for it that will catch leaks from above and route them elsewhere...

*Phew* I'll try pulling it off and cleaning the brushes...
That hood is a good idea. Being the original Temporary Man, I simply clamped the outer steering line hose off to keep the fluid off. Thanks...

Yeah, replacing the rack is a good idea, but my idea of 'fixing' it is to rip it out. A nice little winter project, I think.
