My car has been running strange ever since I changed my oil last week. I changed the oil on Thursday night, and ever since then it seems like there is aloss of power, almost like there is something stopping the car from accelerating. I dont know if the oil change has anything to do with it, but the problem has been on and off since I changed it

Anyone know what this might be?

Thanks
Kyle

Are your lifters making more noise than they used to?

Certain oils (and filters) will make your lifters tick more than others. The ticking (aka phantom knock) can be picked up by the knock sensor and the resulting retarded timing is what you feel as power loss.

I haven't noticed a huge change in the lifter tick, I haven't really been listening for it though. What would you recommend I do?

Thanks
Kyle

Also check to make sure the oil level is high enough. If they didn't put enough oil in, you could tick more then usual and cause phantom knock.

After the car heats up, the oil level is a little bit over the top notch on the oil dip stick.

When there is no power loss, park beside a wall (or go through a drive-thru) and listen.

Then, when there is a power loss do the same. If the ticking is loud compared to before, your problem is likely to be the lifter tick.

First thing to do would be to get some good oil and a mitsu filter on there. Give it a day, and see what comes of it.

What kind of oil would you recommend, I am currently running Valvoline Max Life, I have been running it since December, and I have not had this problem.

Thanks
Kyle

That oil should be OK actually.
I'm using Castrol GTX until I switch to Amsoil (hey, maybe if I get a raise? wink )

What filter are you using? Some filters are really bad for lifter tick, specifically FRAM. There are many other brand names that are really just a FRAM filter inside, so beware.
I use the old style fatty Mitsu filters that aren't even available anymore. I'd say just grab a Mitsu filter, swap it in and see what happens.

Has the oil pressure gone up significantly?
If so you may have a bad pressure relief valve in the new oil filter and in fact are getting no oil pressure.

I hope not as that's nasty. Try another filter as it's not too much money just in case it's a manufacturing defect. Make sure if it's the same company it's not the same lot number just in case they had a bad run.

Cheers Tony
