Has anyone here had to rebuild their 2G alternator??? A new alternator lists for $300, and I can't find anyone who offers a rebuild kit. If you know where I can get one please e-mail me ASAP. Thanks.

Rob

Wow, you can get a NEW one for $300???? GRAB IT! Grab 10 of them, and sell the rest of them to us!

Seriously.

They list for about $700 here. A local rebuild (which doesn't use genuine parts by the way, and isn't as good) was $200 and change...

I'll take one for sure. Get me one.

Well that is $300 from NAPA. I also have other places that are $200, but most likely the same one that NAPA supplies.

Why are they low quality?

Yes.

It would appear, from past experience, that the genuine Mitsu parts, last a lot longer.

I just had mine rebuilt for $180. The voltage regulator, rectifier and stator were replaced. The guy does good work, and it came with a one year warranty.
K&P Auto and Marine Electric in Newmarket. 705.895.5831, ask for Gord. They are right around the corner from CSC. Probably won't help you out west, but it's good for us in Ontario.
Inside tip: Dealer cost for the factory 2g alternator is $450. Retail is $700, as previously noted. Just more proof how much we're jacked for parts by dealers.
If you are installing it yourself, be sure to tighten the ground nut. You don't want any loose connections, that's what cooked mine. The voltage regulator cooked and then it took out headlights, heater fan speed regulator, battery and some other stuff.

Keith,

When Andy and I had our's rebuilt last year at Eastern Auto Electric (in Hamilton) we asked the question.. they mentioned that they couldn't up the output of it, due to it's design (or something along those lines) So we are stuck with the 90Amps, unless you find a creative shop, or do some mounting modifications and use another vehicles alternator...

but come to think of it, would you be caught in the same sitiation we are considering the engine you have? You may have a couple options that the turbo's and 1Gs don't....

Keith,

(Craig--90 amps???) I thought the stock "Canadian" alternator is 75 amps. I didn't get it beefed up because I'm not running a massive stereo or anything like that. I did notice after everything was completed that the lights do not dim as expected at idle any more. I also upgraded to a 600 amp battery that I bought from the same place for $100. It has a 5 year replacement warranty, not a pro-rated warranty like the C-Tire specials.

Stock turbo alternators for CDN models is 90amps...

Keith, that should be almost enough power, even for you. (:
