Hello, I'm new to this forum and DSMs in general. Just picked up a 92 Talon Tsi AWD. So far, so good. No problems to speak of, except for one annoying gremlin.

It seems that the headlights were wired to a switched power source. When the car is off, I can turn the lights between off/parking/on at will. Not so when the car is running. They are "ON" regardless of the position of the switch. Service manual is coming soon, but I'm wondering if anyone can point me in a direction..

They're called 'DRL's, Daytime Running Lights? (:

Your headlights shouldn't turn on with the switch unless the engine is running, though. Battery saving feature...

that's normal... your lights are always on (well if it's not normal I know a lots of DSM having that prob!)

and yes you can turn the lights off/parking/on while the car is not running (mine and numbers of other must have that prob too if it's one!)

and btw welcome to the world of DSM! [Linked Image]

Heh. No, they aren't DRLs. ALL the lights turn on when the engine is runnning (including tails, parking lights, and gauge cluster), regardless of the position of the switch. My understanding is that with the switch in the "off" position, only the DRLs should be on.. not parking and tail-lights. Unless this is a "DSM" thing I need to get used to. [Linked Image]

btw, thanks for the welcome Francois.

that's a DSM thing!

on my car every single light (except brake and backup light) are on as soon as the car is running... the switch has no effect except to allow the high beams to be turned on!

Hah. This newbie has been humbled!! [Linked Image]

I'm sure I'll have lots of questions in the coming weeks. [Linked Image] I'm going through the talon digest and the dsm.org site now.

to add.. I guess Sean Costall's DRL mod applies right here. [Linked Image]

I know this is an old post, but I have a 94 talon, that when the ignition is on, all the lights come on as well, but I checked for the "L" shaped box as per the mod, but it doesn't appear to be there. Anybody have any other ideas how to disable the drl's on my car. Any input would be appreciated.

Lots of FAQ's on that subject, but I'm pro-DRL myself.

I don't know about the non-popups, but your headlights *shouldn't* light until your engine is running with the switch on. Saves the battery if you forget them some day...

I have read all the faqs, but they all tell of the same mod. As I said the box does not appear to be in my car, and as soon as the ignition is on, car running or not, all of the lights come on, not just the headlights, and not only when the car is running. I wouldn't mind so much if it was just the headlights while the car was running.

Dave, I had problems finding it in my car too. Sometimes the box can be wedged up or down in the passender side kickpanel. You'll have to move wires around and stuff, but it should be there. It's just a little black plastic box, and from the way it's rammed in there, you can't really tell that it's an L-shaped box or anything. It's the only black plastic thing in there.

Mine is a '92, but I think they should be the same.

Troy, I'm also a DRL supporter, but I think it's really stupid that the headlights go on when the car turns on. If it had a real DRL circuit that turns the highbeams on a dim setting, I'd keep it, but turning on the lights is really a half-ass solution... Kinda like a patch-up job that they never fixed on the 1G's..

Why would dim headlights make any difference? At least they don't use the high beams like Saturn. (:

It was half-assed that they turn on *all* the lights, yes. But...why would you really care? (: If your headlights turn on with the engine not running, something's been rewired.
