I have an overactive sensor. I'd like to buy a new one but I'm on a ridiclous budget right now. If I just unplug it and moniter the EGT closely I should be in the clear right? I was planning on racing this weekend. Knock (detonation) would cause a severe rise in EGT's right? So I should be "safe" as long as I watch the EGT closely right?? What do you guys think???

Thanks

You have to remove the sensor and ground it. YOu cant just unplug it. It will give you a check engine light and the car wont run well.

Monitoring EGT's wont save you from blowing your motor. By the time your egts are showing high numbers your motor is cooked.

When you see a sharp rise in EGT from knock, it's because the ECU is retarding the timing.

If you remove the knock sensor, the ECU won't know to retard the timing.

You're better off dealing with the gobs of fake knock until the new sensor arrives..

Now, I'll have all kinds of time to talk about DSMs, because I won't be busy fixing mine!

Not a great idea man. If you don't ahve the budget for a simple knock sensor how are you going to afford the rebuild?

How do you know it is over active?

Heres the thing. I really don't care if I blow the motor. IF I did I wouldn't be spraying it with a 100 shot of NOS either. eek I do want to rebuild but also have as much fun as possible before then. With that in mind I don't want to blow it.

I know that the sensor is bad because I called and got the resistance values from the local SATAN and mine is out of spec. Plus my lifters make a $h!t load of noise.(car is a 93 with 103K miles & orig. sensor)

I ran a wire inline with the sensor positive side(leaving the knock sensor plugged in to the block and the wiring plug attached) And then ran the line to a switch and then the switch to ground. I was hoping that by doing this I could test the sensor and see if my poor acceleration (timing retard I think) is due to the sensor. I checked my plugs, I'm running good gas and I have an egt and all are in spec so I doubt I am detonating. Would this "test switch" work? I just get a check engine light when I turn it on. What am I doing wrong?

Thanks for all the concern! laugh
