Hey guys, I'm a real newbie to tuning and now that I have this 6 bolt in the car I need to tune the dang thing and I have no clue where to start.

My mods are listed below, but the important things are the 550 injectors, the 272/272 cams, 14b, no BS, and a 6 bolt in a 2G.

Now, I know I have adjustable timing with the new engine, but I don't know what the heck to do with it. I also have my EGR unhooked (was blocked off when the new engine went in) and I'm getting the P1400 CEL all the time. I don't know if I should hook it back up or not, or just deal with it. Maybe I should follow some of this stuff:

http://www.taboospeedshop.com/emissions1.htm

I read through Wesley's problems and I hope I'm not having the same problems as him:

http://www.ca.dsm.org/ubb/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=16;t=000527

But anyways, I logged a mild pull to 10 lbs of boost under light throttle. I still haven't done a WOT pull because I think I should break the engine in a bit more. I haven't hooked up a MBC yet so I can't really do WOT anyways without seeing 20+ lbs. I only have 800 kms on the engine so far, but here is what it looked like:

10 lbs at 40% throttle

If your IE automatically shrinks that to fit your screen, then expand it so it's not so blurry.

So my question is where do I begin? I have a Walbro 255 here and all the parts for a fuel pump rewire, but I'm not sure if I should install those and then tune, or at least get this working first and then install them.

Unfortunately I have OBDII so there's no knocksum, but you can see that my timing is being retarded. It's VERY noticeable in the car.

Where to start?

Thanks in advance guys!
Noah

The timing is so bad. And it's really hard to tune/troubleshoot on non-WOT runs.

Anyways, could you confirm with me what your o2 voltages are at when it goes stright at the end there.
You want it anywhere in between .88v-.92v. Anything under .88v is lean and might cause a bit of retard in the timing because the ecu uses o2 voltages on non wide open throttle runs.

Get that thing logged with a proper 1g logger. Might I suggest TMO (email me for more details wink *wink* *wink* *nudge* *nudge*).
When you do get it properly logged. Be sure to add inj. pulsewidth and knock, which can help tune.

Come to the Mississauga meet Thursday, 2nd/03 and you may use my logger cable if someone else is so kind to supply you with the laptop.
We should be able to get you strighten up then.

a 1g logger isnt going to work on a 95+ OBDII ECU...and neither is a TMO chip. tongue

I thought he just meant an OBDII cable.

JDM 6-bolt came with no 90-94 ECU? Hmm...

That's right, they still run on the 2G ECU so I still use my OBDII pocket logger.

I'll come out to the Missy meet tonight and chat with you guys for sure.

Hey guys, I'm still having a problem with this bad transistion when under boost. The car seems to bounce the timing all over the place while under boost. I was at Radim's last night for a few hours working on this and we can't figure it out.

We adjusted my AFC all over the place with no luck. We adjusted my timing quite a bit since I have adjustable timing on my CAS now.

It seems to happen 90% of time between 3200 rpms and 3800 rpms. I haven't tested anything much higher then that because I'm not comfortable driving the new engine that hard yet. I have taken it to 5000 rpms and it seemed fine up in that range.

Radim wants to take my car for the day to check all my IC piping and my knock sensor. Does anyone have any other ideas as to what it could be?

On a side note, during our testing I took the car to 100% WOT throttle to test the HI settings on the AFC and for a car that is getting it's timing pulled... it's damn fast. laugh rotate

Mabey an ITC is in the future for you. I am getting one on thursday. I hope it solves some of my timing issues. With wide band dyno tuning, afc and an itc, it can knock all it wants but you will know everything is ok. I dont know, just a thought Noah, I am new to this area myself. If I can get my tranny fixed by this time next week, I am off to see Paul at Neetronics for a session with my ITC.

I was actually thinking of calling Paul soon too. I've talked with him a few times and he's pretty busy right now. He's booking 2 weeks out. SO if you want to see him soon, you should book soon.

I don't want to spend anymore money, but I'll look into an ITC and see.

Yeah, I spoke with paul a little while ago.

Well, I have a line on another guy who has one (ITC) as well, want be to speak with him for ya? I'm sure he will let it go for cheap. But I think he wants it for the rest of the driving season.

Hmm... tempting. I wasn't going to spend anymore money on my car except for maintaining it, but if the price is right I could be interested.
