Need More Info. Why did you take your DSM to the dealer? Were the roads dry / wet?

i bought the car today... roads where wet with sluggish snow... the tires are on factory rims and about 50% used up... would snow tires make a notable difference?

Snow tires always make a notable difference, especially if you've got that much wear on your stockers. Also, it's not up to the car to decide what it does in the snow. When you step on the brakes on slushy roads, the car will slide. You gotta downshift and apply brakes slowly and steadily. The problem sits between the steering wheel and the driver's seat.

Greg, your question about going with 16,15,14" tires for snows: All things being equal, the larger the tire, the more expensive. So 16's will cost more than 15's, etc... But then, if you go with, say, 15's, you've got to get a set of 15" rims (which may offset any price difference). As for 14's, I don't think they'll clear the front calipers on a 2G (but I'm not sure about an NT). As for performance differences between 16,15,14" rims, well... we are talking snow tires here.

I went with steels to save wear and tear on my alloys. It will also save you money in the long run, unless your tires only last one season....Also, always do 4 snow tires. I know its stating the obvious, but doing two can make your car dangerously unpredictable. It pays to consider the type of winter tire to buy too. If you are on a lot of glare ice, something like a blizzak or alpin (ice tire, lots sipes, no blocks)is good, but for heavy snow, an intermediate like a hakka or michelin 330 or even a zovac (hankook) is best. On a side note, my car exhibited scary driving behaviour in the snow, and it turned out to be a bent rear spindle; it was out of alignment. I drove for a whole summer no problem, and the first snow I almost killed myself. william
