Whatever you do, DON'T GO TO THE DEALER, or you'll have no money left for the women! (and chances are they'll screw something else up for you to have to get repaired) Check out the Speed Shops link on the home page: www.ca.dsm.org L8R ------------------ 90 Talon TSI - "Baby" "See you at the stoplight...!!"

to answer your que..it should be done every 60k...i bought my car with 160k on it and i'm figuring that the person before never did it..if you're not sure..do it NOW!!! it costs a bit around 500.00$ but better safe than sorry..or you'll suffer a greater risk of f&%$*&g up your valves..trust me! good luck and god speed.. fabs

Yeah I'll probably be getting mine changed soon as well. Any DSM'ers out there that have done it successfully? I would be more than willing to have it done by a member...

to get the timing belt cover off you might have to tilt the engine with the car jack.

Out of curiosity, when it comes to timing belts, does it apply to all cars? I mean mileage wise, is 60k for all cars? Would it be necessary to change belts on a car that is say 10 years old but has not reached that mileage? I assume weather has an effect on it too.

If you're getting your EVO (bastard (: ) then I'd definitely follow the same rule since it'll be a similar (if not the same) belt on the same engine (almost).
Most hi-performance cars require this to be done fairly often, but 'normal' ones can be ignored for awhile. Your average Honda or Toyota usually gets a new timing belt every 150-200k kms, but most owners usually let it go much longer.

as with any maintenance, many factors come into play... driving style, age, mileage, environment etc.. the 60K is a general ball park number (and if that was related to 20K/yr that would be 3 years). Most feel it's better to spend the $500-1000 (possibly prematurely) to avoid the possible risk of having it go and then costing you $$$$$ but if someone was into gambling, I would hope the odds would work in their favour ------------------ 93 Talon Tsi AWDsealed for freshness www.geocities.com/MotorCity/Street/1125/

The first time my timing belt was changed (on my '91 TSi AWD) was 154,000 K. It was not done by the dealer, as they are prone to mess things up. Then, I got it replaced again, at the dealer this time, at 182,000 K. (It was because of a recall). I'm now at 195,000 K on the orig. water pump. M.

Troy, if you ever come down to Bolivia, I'll let you drive it. =) Estimated date of arrival to Chilean port is March 15th. Icelle Blue E6 with 26k miles on it. I need a car for now, so I'm getting a cheap one, hence the timing belt question. Thanks for the replies.
