It has a clutch...you can use it when driving around on the streets, but when you race, you can shift without it and it won't hurt the tranny. That's what I heard...

A dogbox is essentially a syncro-less transmission. They generally have straight cut gears, but that's not an exclusive rule. Some dogboxes have regular helical cut gears for quieter operation.

Where the difference lies is in how the gears engage and disengage.

On a regular tranny, syncros have little teeth in them that intertwine with teeth on the gears. When you slide the shifter across to engage a gear, the syncros match the speed of the gear to the speed of the wheels to ensure a smooth, quiet shift. This takes time and power, and creates an unnecessary weak spot in the tranny. (Syncros!)

With a dogbox, you generally have a couple of big teeth on the side of the gear which intertwine with a couple of big teeth on the shift slider... this means that there are no weak syncros to slow your shifts down, but it also means the transmission whines while driving, and makes noise going into gear. For a daily driven car with a dogbox, you SHOULD double clutch and revmatch to shift smoothly. On the strip or track, you can forget about rev matching and just force the shifter into gear, knowing there are no weak syncros to strip.

Hope that kinda cleared it up...
