Ok just a quick answer would really be appreciated.

To put a fuel pump in do you have to take out the entire gas tank or can you just tilt it down and slip out the fuel sending unit?

I'm working on the car right now and am pressed for time.

Thanks in advance

Ok 1 more question, is the fuel pump removal at the back of the gas tank where the fuel line comes out? I took all the bolts off but it seems to be stuck inside the tank. I can only pull it out about 1/2 and inch, I dont want to bend or break anything inside.

Thanks again

You don't need to take out the fuel tank...If i remember correctly, you have to remove the backseat and get through it that way...from inside the car.

There should be a write up on how to install a fuel pump in the 1000vfaq articles. Very straight forward. The hardest part is getting that damn screw off...you'll know what I mean once you get to it....use a vice grip and good luck.

That's for an awd car. this is a 2wd vehicle. If I'm not mistaken it's different

2WD
No access from inside the car...

Anyhow, I think this is the problem:
Undo that 22 mm bolt in the center of the tank and allow the gas to drain into the basin. There will be quite a bit so don't be alarmed. Make sure you don't loose the rubber gasket on the back of the 22 mm bolt. P.S that bolt actually holds the bottom of the pump down, if you don't take it out you'll never get the pump out......

On my 1990 FWD I did not need to remove or lower the tank. Yes, the plate at the back with the screws around it is the access panel. Yes the bolt at the bottom of the tank holds in the pump. On mine, removal of this bolt only caused gas to drip. Actual removal of the pump assembly takes rotation of it to fit it out the hole.

The cover bolts on mine were an absolute PITA...good luck
