Ok, so my new talon had decent paint on it. But the last person to own the car wanted to repaint it. So he spray painted most of the car with the grey primer. Its not even and its pealing off. He didn't sand the car so im sure its not even really sticking to the car. Was wondering if theres a way to peal it off with out damaging the paint underneath.

I just want to get the primer off for now till I have extra cash to paint the car. When I do I want to paint it the stock burgandy colour that my last talon was(for those who had seen it) When that time comes I was wondering if the grey primer is better or if the black primer would be better for the car?

As some of you know or can tell from reading this. I know next to nothing about painting a car. Any input is appreciated

Well Jay from my expierence with paint that will be near impossible without damaging your old paint.

I mean.. you can try a paint thinner or acetone. But those products can be harmful to the paint underneath. Now you say that its chipping. Can you just chip it off with some sort of gentle plastic-type scrapper? If the primer bonded with the paint, their is really not much you can do.

I re-finish wheels from time - to - time but I never tried to remove the primer.

Best way in my option: Pick a little corner on the car, maybe somewhere around the bottom part of the bumper or around the wheel well, and try different solvents. Whats the worst that can happen right?

Im not a body-person in any means. So id say to wait a bit and see what other people will come up with...

Yeah like the under sides where the rocker panels fold under. They don't have primer. Worst comes to worst it will still need re painted.

Anyone have thoughts on products to remove the primer?? I imagine if its strong enough to remove primer it will take the paint with it. If I have to go over the whole car With with something plastic I wil. Spot on the hood are chipping off by them self. Also where the license plate frame is. You can see the old paint. It seems to be fine like the primer chipping off has had no effect on the original paint.

Also im now kinda wondering anyone know a place to get a paint job done that won't cost too much. I don't need it to be show room. But I don't want it to look like someone rattle canned it.

Jay I know a guy who will spray a car for a couple hundred bucks but you need to buy the paint. This can get expensive and you need to do any body work yourself and if its sh!t it will look like sh!t when it is painted.

I don't know if Tim G is still doing paint jobs, might want to talk to him.

You could also try the $50 tremclad paintjob, although its a lot of work.

Well I remember someone saying they can get me car paint for discount price. I just have to try to remember who it was lol. The body on the cars not to bad. Just minor rust spots on the fender. Under the car looks clean though.

If its the Tim G im thinking hes on my msn I will ask him if I see him on. For the tremclad I won't. I would rather spend a bit on the paint and get something worth showing off.

Whatever you do NOT get those $500 macco paint jobs.

I think your better off to re-spray the car by hand than those guys.

Of course there is more to it then just this (wax remover, cheese cloth, certain techniques) but...

My advise would be to WET sand it all off with 1000 grit paper. If the process is too slow, try 800 grit and so on. Once all the primer is removed, sand the existing clear to the stock base coat while making sure you do not go too deep (to the original primer). Once the car is sanded to the same consistency (no primer or clear left), you'll be left with the original base exposed. Use a cheap clear coat and give the car a few coats of clear. I've always used the compressor / spray gun combo but try a spray can from crappy. My suggestion is to try this technique on an old fender or something before you try the actual car.

You'll likely be amazed at how nice it'll turn out.

I thought I would post more pics of what the paints looks like. I have no doubt in my mind it will sand off for alot of the primer has already chipped away so I might be in luck.

Even just just using my finger nail I could pull back a bit. So as soon as its warm out. My bro and I are going to wet sand it and re clear it. Might even do the roof too.

It works just fine when the power is hooked up. =] Still going to replace it but hey working 1g cd/tape deck player for sale soon.

^^Ya if it is only a thin layer you should be able to sand it off, or even buff it off with an electric buffer. I wouldn't try any type of thinner or whatever, it'll just take everything off. In order to get a good finish you will need to start with 1000 or 1500 then go to 2000 then buff it with some compound.

just a note, if you are going to do like Tim suggested (go all the way through the clear) make sure you only go up to 1000, maybe 1500, grit before you hit it with the clear or the paint won't stick

Yeah Im looking into a way to get the top coat off. Mainly cause in the while it has been sitting since I posted this. There is alot of the paint that has just flaked off and the paint beneath it seems just as good as it was before the last person who had this car primered it. Some say that a pressure washer might take it off.

I was just going to go 1500 or so and see how much we can get off. If the pressure washer doesnt work. Stop at the clear. I think Im going to make it look half decent. Then get it repainted. Im just having a hard time finding a place to paint it that doesnt want 1grand+

Thinking im going to paint it strait black I hear its the cheapest colour.

This might turn into a where is the best place to get a car painted. I'm not concerned about the engine bay matching the outside of the shell.

Don't want to be that cheap. lol I want to spray gun it. But don't know either someone who can do it or a place to buy car paint and clear for someone who has a spray gun.

It looks like cheap primer, thinners should take it off.
Try a spot first (wipe on and wipe off) If it's factory clear it wont wash off.

Yeah I am thinking about trying the thinner. Right now I am concerned about getting the timing and rad changed. I will probably get around to the paint on sunday.

Any one know how much paint thinner I might need??(This questions might be dumb) But I haven't dealt much with paint. Even less with thinner.

I know it doesn't take all that much paint to spray a car (depending on howmany coats)

Also, I believe it is the factory paint. The paint under the hood and all that is the same condition/colour as the outside WAS.

Thinner is cheap. Get a gallon then you can clean your gun and stuff after.
As for paint I think you should get 1 gallon also just to be safe.
