Taking a trip to Puerto Vallarta and looking for a cell phone that will work there to phone toronto numbers. A friend said that Rogers network will work and a counterpart of his had a Rogers cell with a 416 number that allowed him to call the gta with no long distance charges. Something about a SIM required though? Anyone done this? I will talk to Rogers on saturday but not sure if this is something they will do or if I have to hit one of those unlocked GSM phone kiosks?

You just go get a phone unlocked and you take out your sim card with the Toronto number and put in one from Mexico. Buy the vouchers for whatever amount of money and you can call/text cheaper.

Calling the gta from Mexico will not be free any way you slice it. It is actually quite expensive. If you use your Rogers GSM phone with the Rogers SIM you can find the rates here:

Hmm, the link I posted is for LD charges TO Mexico. Swapping the SIM for a local Mexican number (pay-as-you-go) is an option, although according to this provider's link you are looking at $2.50 to call TO:

Here is some more info:

I recall checking what it would cost to call the GTA from Mexico using my Bell phone and it was something along $5 a minute. Also keep in mind that roaming data charges are just ridiculous.

Just make sure that no matter what you don't call anyone collect, especially from the pay phones in MX. Their rates range from $5-50 per minute. When I was living in Puerto Escondido, one of the people that I met from Canada had been calling home every other night and their phone bill was over $3000 for the 2 weeks he was there.

thanks for the help. I brought my bell cdma phone and it works fine with a signal all the way here but it required a call to bell tech services to set it up. My gsm phone from rogers connected to telcel but can only use for emergency call right now. I will pick up a telcel prepaid sim from one of the many local shops for $10 which gives me a local cell # and then calling card. the only problem with this is that i have to give the GTA callers a new number then they have to use a calling card and make an international call.

<Oh p.s the weather is nice and warm at 28C with a nice breeze off the ocean with three cerveza for 50 pesos or less than $5 bucks. the senioritas are tanned and lovely the food is great and the ocean is warm....
