I am just reading up on removing the head to see how much damage I did to my engine, and was reading on removing the timing belt..
Since my engine is dead do I really need to worry about aligning the timing marks on the cam gears?

Could I just skip some steps from the vfaq since it assumes I have a working engine and want to put things back together easily?

Also a side note, my timing belt has very few km on it (maybe 2000...) could it be reused, or should I just chuck it......
If I should throw it away, couldn't I just cut it off to get to the block quicker?

Dont reuse the timing belt.
Cutting the belt is fine just set the engine to TDC before cutting because the exhaust can will spring forward.
If your trying to see the damage there is no point in causing more, give you an unfair idea of what happened.

I would think that you could actually reuse the timing belt as long as it is in perfect shape and had not been damaged.

Not sure exactly what happened to your engine but did you consider pulling the oil pan off or drain the oil to look for metal chunks/slivers?

If you align the marks you will know if the tbelt skipped any teeth. If it did obviously you shouldn't reuse it. If it's the bottom end that bit the dust (eg: spun bearing, not broken con rod) and the head is fine I would consider reusing it after a careful inspection. Then again if you find substantial damage and rebuild it, do you really want to risk you new engine to an $80 part?

I would not re use the belt. If you are building a new motor, why put a used belt on it?
