Hey all, I was just wondering if anyone in the area has a Drill press I can use. I need it to drill a 5/8" hole in my downpipe for an o2 bung. I have the bits but I'm having trouble drilling into this stainless frown

Thanks in advance

you can use a step drill bit, that's what I used worked great.

Speaking of steps, have you tried starting with a small bit and stepping your way up? Also some tapping oil might help.
I have a small drill press that I've not had to use yet - if you want to break it in for me this weekend, send me a PM.

Are you sure the bits are sharp Chris?

I didnt have any problems drilling in for my wideband bung.

Pilot hole followed by a couple bigger ones worked fine.

I'm using brand new bits and lots of tap oil.

I'll try again tonight. Maybe I'm using too small of a pilot.

I use a pin punch to start my first pilot. The little dent stops the pilot bit from sliding around.

I think you mean "prick" punch smile

I also have a stepper bit.

I'll try it.

Keep the speed down in stainless. Too fast and you will just burn up your drill bits.

No luck with the stepper bit frown

I'm not going too fast but still putting some weight on it. Still nothing :S

I'll see what home depot has

If you have "burned" the area before, you might have actually HARDENED it. In that case, you MIGHT end up having to go through with like a grinding bit in a dremel and open it up with that..

Good luck....

I'm actually learning metallurgy in school so I made sure not to go too fast to prevent that.

Crappy tire has a 5/8" ss bit for $24!

Any other suggestions?

I might just drop by my local exhaust shop and see what they can do.

If you are planning to come down this way at all, and if the pipe is off the car, I will drill it for you..
