My 2nd retro, my first one turned out like crap so I started this one with a pair of Ebay 2Gb Halo Lights (I took the halos out). I've been working on these for a while now and hope to have them on the car next week for the driving across the country.
Allow me to bring you up to speed.

Specs:
4 FX-R Projectors (2 per side)
50W ballasts (for the inners)
Bosch AL Gen 2 Ballasts (for the outters) which are boostable to 80W via a cabin mounted pot
Inners run Phillips 85122+ Bulbs
Outters run Morimoto 5000K bulbs

The lights themselves.

I picked up some 1x1 aluminum tube to build myself a jig to mount the lights too for bench aiming. Cut the tube in half and drilled some holes. No pictures of the jig in action though because I was on my phone. Basically I leveled the whole housing and marked the cut off on my balcony wall.
[Linked Image]

I removed all the factory hardware from the housings, drilled and taped my FX-Rs to accept 1/4-20 bolts, drilled some holes and....

Mounted on the jig (inner is off rotation here but has been fixed now).

All aimed!

I ditched the LEDs since they do not like heat. Instead I painted the shields red.
[Linked Image]

After much screwing around I finally got the all mounted and aimed sort of.
[Linked Image]

All but the driver side inner was good, the rotation is off on that one, hopefully I have it right now. If I don't I simply won't use the inners. Yes the rotation is off but shouldn't be enough to cause any issues.

Need to trim the shrouds and do a finally test aim on the car. Then I'll build my wiring harness next week.

And you don't consider that a nice view?!?!? Personally, I'm rather fond of our good ol' armour tongue

When you spend as much time as I do in a LAV with piss bottles everywhere and when you reach for a bottle of water and you ingest tobacco spit instead, you will not have the same opinion! lol, I'd trade my view for city lights anyday. My building is on a direct path from a helipad to a fast rope zone (urban operations range) While its fun to bail out of a helicopter, when CSOR does it at 3am it gets old quick!

I'd trade these city lights for the country in a heart beat.

Got them on the car now, aim is a bit high so I'll see if I can drop it down.
I'm not running shrouds as I have to custom make something, it's ugly but it performs so......

I need to go out tomorrow and get them aimed better, they are a touch too low, so no beam shots. I think the lens are causing a bit of glare because they are in such bad shape, they really softened my cut off which pisses me off. After I move I'll pick up another set of the same lights off eBay to hack up for parts.

Here's some day time pics and a night pic, yes my car is dirty as hell thanks to the rain lately. Cleaning never ends with a black car.

lol yeah good job!

Car looks nice with the retro HID headlights.

It's got that terminator look or decepticon look to it.

Kudos!

Oh and your car's not dirty, trust me. Haha.

Thanks Mike.
I just wish the shrouds would have fit, instead I'm left custom making something. When I do though I will try and make it look more OEM.

I think you should leave some of the grey of the housings visible before the shrouds start. Then when you find Sarah Connor, bring her to me! cool

I'll likely have the chrome rings showing, a chrome and black combo like the new BMW head lights.

Got them aimed tonight and took a bunch of pictures.

I like the tech look. I would leave the original bezel out and just put in a simple plate to hide some of the housing and wires. I like the red eyeball look.

The fuzzy cutoff can be sharpened up by adjusting the shield positioning. The position of the lens to the shield is most critical and you will see a big difference with even a 0.020" shift. It could be caused even by some paint buildup on the shield.

Leaving the chrome bezel out will help keep the glare down too.

Thanks Jamie.

I know it's the lens causing my poor cut off because when I was testing with the lens off my cut off was razor sharp. I hope that changing the lens to new ones will fix this issue.
