So who's happy about the copyrights bill? Especially the part about unlocking phones?

One thing im confuse about is, how can a carrier check to see if a certain phone is unlocked? I can understand grey market phone running on their network - just check the IMEI. But for the unlock... hmmmm.

Another thing, i rip all of my DVD's for my own collection. Whether to stream to my ps3, watch it from my other computers or for archiving purposes.

I bought the DVD/CD, i have a right to rip that and use any kind of device to play it with.

It seems to me this bill is more pro-industry that pro-consumers. Very ass-backwards IMO. If this bill passes, guaranteed more people will be D/L instead of purchasing.

Well the law seems to be only affecting those that BREAK the encryption, still wont affect the people who download it, as we are not breaking the encryption of a DVD.

How long until everything gets encrypted?
And once something is encrypted, it's effectively copyrighted FOREVER!! I don't think that's how copyright is supposed to work, is it?

Those who have known me a while know how I feel about downloading music and such that does not belong to you without paying for it. I buy all my music and always have.

But this law seems fucked up.

I figure that if I buy a CD I have bought the rights to those songs. If I want to burn them to MP3 so I can throw them onto my uSD card for me BlackBerry or USB stick for the car or Xbox I should damn well be allowed to. I bought the damn songs and should get to use them in what ever device I choose to.

The people ripping movies to .avi files will never encrypt it, so we will never break the law because we will never have to break encryption.

And on that site it says it is illegal to download and upload in Canada. They are wrong, it is illegal to upload and download with the intent to share.

I was only talking about the same thing as Mike.. Ripping something you own, for your own personal use.
The law put in place to stop the illegitimate distributors hurts the legitimate users.

The digital lock bullshit is pressure from the USA. They want Canada to have a law set up just like their fucked up DMCA, because that's what the US media giants want. I say frack 'em and the horse they rode in on.

Without the anti-lock breaking part, the bill actually looks pretty good... but with it left in, the rest of the bill means exactly jack and sh!t. Honestly i'm kind of hoping this bill dies. Maybe if the "third time's the charm" falls on it's face the fracking Tories will actually listen to that big copyright campaign/survey they conducted last year. Yeah right.

I'm sure this bill will go through, all the useless ones do, look at the Breed Specific Ban against Pitbulls and Staffys. Like come on now.

WE will know! From the PAIN IN THE ASS of having to jump through hoops to always be ahead of the encryption.

Hey maybe the new law will drive more people to torrents because they are already decrypted and portable.
FAIL
