Is anyone here a proud or shameful Saab owner?

I recently picked up a 9-5 wagon with a seized engine and will be working on it with some competent help.

Has anyone had any experience with them?

They seem to have a poorly designed oil pick up that clogs and then starves the engine - so have to fix that!

Isn't it basically a GM. Is the motor GM too ?

Edit: spelling

The facts might say it was engineered under GM leadership

but does it LOOK like a GM to you?

Gm owned and provided some parts. Some of the issues of gms show up in the Saab but it's the minor things. Cars from what I was told are still made at the Saab plant gm provided some of the sensors and the chasis. I think Saab does the motor but it's a Eco tec design.

Have a couple friends with them and this is what I gathered always liked them. Just too pricey for my liking.

Any one got a Saab aero?

My understanding is that it doesn't take much to get near to "aero" spec.

Similar to dsm's you can get into the code pretty easily and there are some hardcore coders out there for saab open source ecu coding

You need a turbo (a mitsu td04 no less), injectors, and a new map.

Has Saab really made their ecu to be open source?! That's incredible! Almost as incredible as apple giving up and legalizing jailbreaking of iDevices

I was in a a normal 95, then I was in an aero. The difference between them both was unreal.

If you can do that little to make it that good, that is awesome!

Does anyone know how to find out the compression service limits on the 9-5 2.3l 235e engine?

Have not been able to find it anywhere, service manual is on order.

Update on my saab adventures:

Hi there. Just got the 99 saab 9-5, 2.3 turbo, very nice car. Bought it with a blown engine. Put a used engine in there.

Last saturday we were driving for about 35 minutes from my house and the car drove nice. No check engine or nothing. All the sudden check engine come on on the dash board and check gear box right beside it.
Pulled the car on the shoulder, put it in park, and then drive and you can feel it engaging but no gear just rpm go up and nothing. The same goes for reverse, gear 3, 2, 1 and nothing just the rpm go up and nothing.

Scanned codes P0730, P0722 and P1624.

So far - found the following:

P1624 (means cel is lit)
p0730, P0730 Incorrect Gear Ratio
p0722, P0722 Output Speed Sensor Circuit No Signal

Replaced the trans speed output sensor - codes are all gone now - but no change with trans - no movement in any gear.

Any dsm brains want to apply their powers to the saab situ?

Not specific but check the trans fluid level and condition. If it's all black then I'd say your clutches are cooked.
You can try a battery reset after clearing all the codes. (disconnect the neg terminal on the battery and short the neg batt cable to the positive for a minute) then put back together and try driving it.

Honestly it sounds like your trans is cooked and needs replacement. When the input speed from the engine does not match the output speed of your transmission it sets a fault. (which appears to be what you have)

Other than that....

All the torque convertor bolts fell off.
Shifter cable is off or loose and cannot bring properly into gear.

Ps I think the Areo is a beautiful car but probably the main problem is no one knows how to fix them.

My friend has a 9-3 auto (turbo) which is driven gently and has given no problems for 160k except the ignition coil pack failed.

I met a guy who went through 2 engines in under 100k driving normally. (luckily it was under warranty, only 3year old)
