I need confirmation that the rear 1g speakers are 6x9 as I'm looking to replace them with aftermarket ones. I'd like to know how much of an issue is the mounting depth as I've heard that could be a problem. Is there another size speaker that will bolt up to the existing holes?

I am 99% sure that they are not 6x9 but rather 6.5"

Yeah thats what Futureshops speaker guide calls for, however weird that they are mounted with an oval grill but those were the ways back in the day.
6.5 is way better IMO lots more options available

The rear speakers are 6X9, with a depth of aprox. 2 3/4".
The front ones are 6.5".

I'm still pretty sure that I had 6.5" back there..
So I went into CAPS and I'm now changing my answer to: 6x9 OR 6.5"

It seems to depend on the options.
There is 6"x9" listed and also 16CM, depending on the option code.
16CM is close to 6.5"

Now you might still have an easier time mounting them if you are replacing the same size.

My 6.5" memoir is based on my old 1.8L Talon. No, it had a power rack, thanks for asking smile

I agree 100%

I ripped out my interior in my NT laser to swap in the 6x9's from my Turbo Laser only to find out the NT's use 6.5" speakers lol. I like learning the hard way.

Okay, 6X9 it is. Hopefully I can find a smaller magnet speaker with a depth not exceeding 2 3/4". Any suggestions of brands and models that actually fit in there seeing that most 6x9 are around 3.5" deep?

Infinity has a shallow depth 6x9 that has great sound. They do offer more than one 6x9 so make sure that your requesting the shallow depth and most audio places know what your looking for

You could always hammer in the fender to allow for clearance issues, I've heard of people doing that. Not sure if it causes other issues though.

I hammered mine in, no issues as you only have to bump it in maybe 1/4" or so, but I was on stock suspension and wheels at the time.

No need to hammer as I've found some 6x9's with a 2 1/4" mounting depth. Hopefully, my rear speakers ARE indeed those. In the event that they actually are 6.5's I'll move my Sony door speakers to the rear and find replacements to fill those new holes.

I have 6x9 pioneers in mine, I had 6.5 in the rear and I hated them, If you want bass but don't want to put a sub in then go with 6x9. I had no mounting issues with my pioneers, but it looked like someone had already dinged in the metal for clearance.

I have some crappy (unknown brand) 6X9's in the rear of my 1G as well. One doesn't work and the other is blown, but they do fit, and I didn't have to dent anything
