Im looking for a new battery since mine decided to die at the absolute best time of the year. WINTER! I would like to upgrade my existing battery and I thought this would be a good investment. However, I have searched and found that they do not make one that fits the 1G (1990) They only make one that comes close to fitting the 2G. Is this true? I thought 1G and 2G batteries were the same size?

What are my options if I have a stereo and other aftermaket junk in my car?

PS- I need help today!!

Thanks for your help.

It fits nicely on a 1G. Just don't use the plastic tray.

They should.

Check crappy tire. They have the Optima batteries as well as their new line of spiral cell Eliminator batteries. They are the same contruction as the Optimas but far cheaper (although since they are new, no one knows how well they work compared to the Optimas)

Batteries are more or less generic fit. Find one that has the same size as your battery tray and can put up about 600 cold cranking amps and it shoudl work fine, even if your vehicle is not listed.

If you have a membership, Costco carries Optimas now. If you want something cheaper, I am a fan of Interstate.

Just bought one. Fits fine in my 1G.

Model D34/78 (or D34). About $225 at Costco. Works really well, too.

The yellow top and red top are the same size, by the way. I have had 2 red tops and 1 yellow top. I killed the 1st one, not the fault of the battery. The second lasted 6-1/2 years.

Would you recommend a red top over the yellow top for the average user? And how much was the redtop?

I just got the Eliminator at crappy,
$85.99

Comes with 3 year free replacement warranty.. What do I have to lose, even my car might not last 3 years..
And even if it does, it also comes with 9 year prorated warranty, so I ll have to pay a bit, but still get a new one..

You also get the convenience of having a crappy pretty close to anywhere your battery breaks down.. Now I can turn on my super energy consuming driving lights and not have to worry about paying for a new battery when this one dies.

I would. I see no disadvantage, aside from maybe cost. 50 CCA isn't a big deal. And the heavier plates in the yellow top make it more resistant to discharge-related damage.

I don't know what I paid for my original red top. But when I replaced it, yellow tops were over $300. They're getting cheaper.

i had one bad yellow top die on me like in a few months. The second one seems ok.I also have two redtops.Have redtop in the talon right now.Seems to be working fine.I don't see the advantage to the yellow unless you have some monster stereo you like to play with the car off.Actually think the red are better for main batteries and cheaper to boot. But if you are trying to color coordinate or something.. smile

I have a Optima Blue Top Marine Grade Battery and it has yet to die on me. Even with the cold weather, my gas line frezes up long before my battery gives out. Great batteries, Little pricey, but you can get refurbished ones from East HAmilton Radio for cheaper and they still have the same warranty....
My two pennies,

If you look at the specs, there are two blue top marine batteries. One is equal to the red top (800 CCA starting), one is equal to the yellow top (750 CCA deep-cycle). The only difference is the blue tops have additional terminals on the top for connecting marine equipment like trolling motors. Otherwise they're identical to the others.

I almost got a blue top, but the extra terminals would have interfered with my strut tower brace. frown It would have looked really nice in my engine bay, and the extra terminals are good for attaching extra stuff like gauges, etc.

Lots better than before. I paid over $200 for my red top, when the yellows were over $300.

Just in case anyone is not aware, there are a few models of each type - red, yellow, blue - in different sizes. Just make sure you get the right size. For our cars, it's size 34. 34/78 works too. The model numbers are:

Red: model 34
Red: model 34/78 (with top & side terminals)
Yellow: model D34 (deep cycle)
Yellow: model D34/78 (deep cycle with top & side terminals)
Blue: model 34M (marine terminals)
Blue: model D34M (deep cycle with marine terminals)

Top & side models have top posts with optional side posts. Marine models have standard posts and marine connectors, both on top. Look on their website for a picture.

My Costco didn't have the red top in the right size. Oh well! laugh

So is the Red top not a deep cycle?
