Hey guys,

I am trying to solve my cruise control whoes but haven't had much luck so I am hoping someone can give me a few ideas.

The cruise does not engage at all. The light on the dash switch comes on but the green cruise light on the cluster does not. Everything related to the cruise under the hood is connected so what else could be causing the problem? I did disconnect the clutch switch to prevent starting the car by using the clutch pedal but I don;t believe this switch is tied to thr cruise control system or is it?

Thanks in advance.

Can't remember for sure, but I thought the green dash light only came on when cruise was actually set, not by simply pushing the dash button.

The clutch switch for the starter interlock is not related to the cruise at all. The other clutch switch is though. (there is two for some strange reason)

First up to check would be fuses. There seems to be 7 that could be involved:
underhood
#2 - 15A
#5 - 15A
#7 - 5A
#11 - 10A
#12 - 10A
footwell
#8 - 10A
#15 - 10A

Next would to be to check the two switches responsible for turning it off - the clutch switch and brake switch.

Then the main switch in the dash could be faulty. It is possible that the light can be illuminated without anything else actually going on.

Another possibility is the control stick is wonky and isn't allowing the signal to be set.

Your vehicle speed sensor could be another source of error.

And lastly, your cruise ECU could be defunct.

It sounds like the system is activating but not taking over the speed. If all the fuses and hoses are fine then I think the next thing to check is what the cruise ECU sees. Is there a troubleshooting procedure in the shop manual for this? It seems so complicated that the manual is probably required.

I think that's because for starting you want the clutch fully disengaged but for cruise control you want the clutch fully engaged. So they put one switch at each end of the throw.

Thanks for the help guys. I'll check what was suggested above by Andrew but if all checks out okay, I think I'll leave it the way it is. Sounds like a whole lot of trouble for something that is hardly used.

Yeah, there is a lot involved with it. I'll post the four pages of the relevant section from the electrical manual.

The green light on the dash is controlled by the cruise ECU.

From the diagram, the switch on the dash has two separate throws. One for the light, one for the relay. It is possible for the light on the switch to be on even though the relay isn't working.

For what it's worth I had a similar problem when I first put my 2g on the road. Got the little light on the main on/off to light up but it seemed nothing would get the green "CRUISE" light to go on and actually enage the cruise. Incidently, I had/have the clutch switch thingy disconnected as well.

Turns out that the ACC/RES,CANCEL,COAST/SET lever on the steering wheel was "on" and had to be reset by CANCELing it. I figured the main on/off switch sort of cancelled everything so no cancel of that lever was necessary, but, at least in my case, that apparently wasn't so. I simply moved the steering wheel lever to CANCEL and started the whole procedure again, and it worked. Has worked fine ever since.

Thanks for all the help. I wish mine was as easy to fix as yours Paul but I have tried your method and no dice frown

I don't suppose there's a dedicated cruise fuse that could be throwing a wrench into the problem?

Also, where is the relay located?

From what I can see, the relay is part of the dash switch.

And sadly, no one fuse is responsible for the cruise and nothing else. all the fuses I listed above are part of the wiring diagram for the cruise control and play into it somehow.

Somebody rewired it to bypass the fuse?

Who knows! I know I didn't. Apparently this fuse has something to do with the power locks and mine have been acting up lately so this could be the problem. Maybe, just maybe the cruise will start to work lol.

With electrical...sometimes anything is possible.

A buggered aftermarket alarm brain was the reason for my power locks doing the dirty. Burned out a few motors because it didn't understand the word 'pulse'.

hahah rotflmao

it's not the cars it's the people who butcher them. My 99 eclipse was nothing but nighmare (better now after I put 4 grand in it) compare to super reliable 96 TSi that I have for 7 years.

My cruise also does not come on and probably because previous owner cut wires somewhere to hookup some useless junk. It was a big pain driving 4000k to LA without it. Cruise in 96 TSi still works like a charm!
Let me know once yours is fixed. Good luck!

You're absolutely right Alex. I only know the mess my car was in when I got it and the money, effort put into it to male it the way it is now. I will monkey around with it the next few days and post my findings as I go along. If I had to do this again, I would start with as close to stock platform and do it the long hard and expensive way.

Well, looks like blown fuse was the cause. Took the car out tonight and cruise works beautifully. I love these cars lol.

Thanks to everyone for the help smile
