I am looking into a stand alone engine system and am trying to justify to myself that I need it. I am thinking that and AFC will run me oh... $550. I can get a new EMS for $1900. This leaves a price ofset of $1350roughly. The EMS could help me with getting my car running flawlessly and not affecting timing. Getting my fan to kick in cooler so I am not running at 92* idle, and 75* highway.

Is going standalone worth this price difference? Are there any other standalone options with the tuning features of AEM? Also if someone has a used one they are looking to get rid of (Im dreaming here ok...), let me know. I appreciate your input.

I have heard of system called megasquirt which uses a GM maf and a couple other sensors to do the job. I am not sure of any other info look it up on google.

Edit: here is the Official link http://www.megasquirt.info/index.html

Looks rather interesting and it is cheap.

It is a fuel control system only not sure what you would have to do about ignition maybe a nice MSD setup?

My brother is going to be running this on his AE86 Toyota Corolla which he will be turbocharging in the future ( a year or so at his rate of things lol)

Standalone is awesome. I see all the problems everyone has with the stock ECU, and laugh. If you can afford it, then do it.

You can sell your stock ECU (and MAF if 2G) to make up some of the money.

I've heard of problems with the AEM. Haltech is solid, and proven.

I agree with Nick on this one. AEM is is having a tons of problems with controlling ignition.

My Haltech E11 v2 is awesome with my 2.5L if you can come up with the money.

if you're caught doing 140kmh in a 100 zone = a few points
150kmh in a 100 zone, you'll be arrested.
350kmh in a 100 zone, you'll be shot. On the side of the road. Like a rabid dog...

Be prepared for a headache when it comes to tuning... you'll either learn yourself the hard way, or have to pay a shop to do it the right way.

I've got a Haltech E6K on my 2.9L and its working good.

I'm driving a 93 TSi. I was looking at the Haltech E11V2, but damn its pricy.. how much difference is the between the E6 and E11, and if you dont mind my asking how much and where did you get your ECU's? How much can I get for my stock ECU? If I go stand alone, am I still going to need my MAF translator to run my 3" maf?? thanks for the info guys

Most people with Haltechs run E6Ks. That's what ihave. The E11 has some extra features, it's up to each person whether they cna justify the extra cost.

Mine cost me $2200 CAD a few years ago. They're much cheaper now. The E6X (E6K replacement) goes for about $1100 USD. The E11 is about $2200 USD.

The E6X has all the same features as the E6K, but allows direct connection for full sequential, unlike the E6K which needs a little fiddling. It also gives you dual mapping, and a few other little things.

EPROM ECUs can go for $200 or more. Non-EPROM $100 or so if you find the right buyer.

You don't need the MAF or the MAF-T. The Haltechs run a MAP sensor, which frees you of all the troubles of a MAF sensor. So, there's another thing you can sell.

It's got a bit of a learning curve, but it's not too bad. I would never go back to a stock ECU with piggybacks.

Do a search.

Found a few dealers on google in seconds.

Also found a good deal on ebay.

Ok, I got a few more questions:

It looks as thought the haltech does NOT use a knock sensor... does it? Can i use my factory ISC, or am I going to have to get one from Haltech? When i remove my factory ECU, is my A/C still going to function properly and idle up? Is there an install page somewhere for a Haltech E6X in a 1G DSM??

Thanks again. I did some searching this time, and it brought these questions to mind.
