Pros:
-removes load off the belt = hp and torque
-removes a belt that can break and take out the timing belt

Cons:
-more vibration at idle (different amount from one car to the next)

If your motor is out it's a no brainer, remove them. Search the archives for more info.

I second Mike's motion.

Vibration can be tolerated in most case.

I'm lookin at doin this too. If I'm going to take the time to do all this I suppose I might as well change the timing belt as well eh? Considering the work involved relative to the price of a belt might as well.

Does anyone have any opinions about which method to do this balance shaft removal, like using a "kit" or doing the free method??

I did the free way, and there hasn't been leaking of any problems yet.
I had to due to time constraints, but it seemed to work well, i just used the freeze plug for the front shaft, and i cut the back one short and welded it shut. A few more steps and that was it.

The kit may be more convieniant, it's up to you
