Wondering what people are using (if you even have one...)
I've seen rad pipe heaters, oil pan heaters, block heater which replace an expansion plug, and magnetic block heaters.

Opinions? Experience? and go!

Oh, and the reason for this discussion is the continuious -40*C days here in Moose Jaw that I'm being warned about...

A few guys use the lower water pipe ones and seem to be good with it.
From what I have read the expansion plug ones are the best.

My Laser originally came from Saskatewan and it has an oil pan heater. Although it is my winter beater I never felt it was necessary for Ontario winters. But the previous owner put 200k on the engine and it is still going strong at 290k so it must have been effective.

I've got a pad on the bottom of my oil pan, i like warming it up for awhile in the winter since the car is only started a few times a month, seems to significantly reduce the strain on the motor when its cranking in -20 or -30.

Lower rad hose heater in mine. Works a treat and is easy to install.

I installed a block heater into my 2g. Worked well and was easy to install. All I had to do was remove the intake manifold bracket and use a long screwdriver against one edge of the frost plug and hammered it, it spun in place, vise grips and out it came. Slide in the block heater and tightened it down. Easy easy.

On the 1g I use just an oil pan heater and had no issues last winter. Previously on the same 1g, Garret had used a lower rad hose heater and he said it worked well too - when I took it over the cord connection to the heater was no longer stable and it ended up not working, so I replaced it with an oil pan heater.

Last winter, we were running a 2g maf, and 450cc inhectors with a stock 1g auto ecu. Which was designed for 380cc. If the temps got down past -10, the car wouldnt start unless we poured hot water on the coolant temp sensor. Cause the Ecu couldnt ajdust the cold start for the wrong injectors.

But it would start no prob when the lower rad pipe heater was plugged in.

I've got one that goes in a freeze plug on a spare block if you want it Johnny.

Thanks for the input all. I think I'm going to go with the Freeze plug type.
