Well, I'm on the fence about selling/trading in my Evo to buy something brand new. Looking to get your guys thoughts!

The wants:
- Solid warranty
- Decent fuel economy
- Under $35,000
- Quick, and fun to drive year round

Right now, I'm just researching options but have these written down

1) 2014 Hyundai Genesis R-Spec
2) 2015 Volkswagen GTI
3) 2014 Mitsubishi Ralliart (downgrade, I know)
4) 2015 Subaru BRZ

BRZ will be tons of fun in the winter!! tongue
I have test drove all of them and BRZ definitely wins, the traction control is really impressive too so it actually would be alright in the winter.
That would be my choice though

The BRZ is a great little car,but coming from an EVO it might seem a little under powered.I took one out it was a lot of fun,but lets be honest its a bit of a dog, power wise my ego couldn't take getting dusted by susie soccer in her minivan lol

Yeah, I figured I might feel that. But knowing I have the peace of mind from a warranty... it'll help me look past it.

I've never owned a new car so I've always got stuck paying 100% of repair bills. I'm just tired of it.

Bryan, what would your 2nd pick be?

I only have one parking spot, otherwise that would have happened already.

2016 Ford focus RS.Either 2.0l Turbo or 2.3L turbo and AWD. Probably worth the wait!

2015 Golf R

BRZ with LSX swap... Procharged LSX... Procharged LSX BRZ on spray...

I don't want to wait until 2016 - this will likely happen within the next couple months.

The 2015 Golf R would be an option, but pretty sure it will be $40,000+ as explained here

Quote
The 2015 Volkswagen Golf R has not yet been priced for Canada, however, expect that the base car’s sticker to hover around the $40,000 mark.

Well everything you listed you'll probably regret getting other than the BRZ but the lack of power will get to ya quickly. If your Evo is a standard I'd say wait a bit and feel out future options. Now if yours is a SST equipped car DUMP IT!!

Soo what prompted this all sudden? If you don't mind me asking?

I was told exact same thing when i bought my used dsm 10 years or so ago. With proper maintenance i am still rocking that dsm with unopened engine & major drivetrain components. I'll prove it once again that with proper maintenance my evo x mr (with sst) will live just as long as my talon wink

Mike,
Sorry to hear your EVO didnt find spot in your heart the way Spyder did.
Speaking from my own experience, new car will not help you save money on repair bills or gas. Money will leak elsewhere.

It wasn't all of a sudden.. I've been thinking about it for a couple months now. I want something with a warranty because I can't be constantly dealing to pay out of pocket for repairs.

Recently, my CMC exploded (which is a common problem) along with the clutch fork deciding it wanted to snap (not so common). Neither of those can be tied to my driving style as I do not drive the car hard. I've only had the car for a year, and it now has 130k.

Me being not so mechanically inclined, would benefit from being able to get work done under warranty at a dealer, rather than dealing with things as they happen.

Here are few examples:
- PST tax plus all other crap dealer will charge
- insurance will force you to pay full coverege
- borrowing cost on financing
- every stupid small items you'll want in your new car "sun roof, stereo, hid" will hit your final price way up
- you'll loose ton of money on trading your evo, especially if there any kind of accident on record

Why is that? I love my evo x with sst, I knew before buying my x that it could potentially be quite expensive to maintain, they do have some rather unfortunate issues like the Cmc, Ayc pumps and timing chains in the earlier models and these are by no means the cheapest cars to buy, but you really do get a lot features for what you pay(at least in an MR).

Mike if I am to forget the fact that the ralliart is AWD it would be a toss up between the golf and the ralliart.
The GTI was super comfortable and the interior is pretty nice I just don't think I could ever own a FWD car again.
Between a Golf R, if you can find one, and a ralliart I don't think there is much contest, the golf R would make a much nicer DD.
Also, not interested in a WRX?

Mike to save a bit I would suggest you find something that's coming off a lease with less than 50k, it should save you a fair bit. leasebusters is a good site for that.

The Golf R has by far the nicest interior of those cars listed but it's also the most expensive (almost Evo money).

I personally hate the way VW's drive and find they are laggy as heck for such a small turbo. The R is at least AWD which is nice; I would NOT get a GTI or a GLI personally.

The BRZ/FRS handles nicely but like you said - very underpowered. If anything you'd probably have the best combination of nice interior, power, fun, and build quality with the 2.0T Genesis R-Spec Coupe. It's definitely got the best brakes of the bunch (nice Brembos) and is the fastest of them all too. And as you know it doesn't take much to get a lot more out of a factory turbo engine wink

That's why I have that as #1. I've always been a fan of the Genesis, and when I read about the R-Spec, it seems pretty cool. I don't need all the fancy bells and whistles that come in the interior of the 3.8L but want a bit more performance gains from the standard 2.0L.

I took the 2.0T out two or three years ago and it was as impressive as the base model mustang.
Based on what guys have been saying over the past year or so the car has changed a lot so maybe it's time to updated my opinion.
Only recommendation I have is stay as far as you can from Hyundai Brampton, there is only one sales person in that place that is useful the rest of them are lazy ass hats.

Considering the R-Spec is cheaper than the base model right now I think it's worth a look

Check the Canadian black book on your evo.

Alex is right. You'll likely refinance negative equity going into another car so soon.

And people really need to shop banks for their own rates before buying used cars through the dealer.

One of the best things you can do to eliminate any negative equity is to wait for the manufacturer to host a sale that includes a giant rebate.

I don't think I'd be able to trade an Evo X for any of those cars, especailly if its in good shape. Knock on wood, I haven't had a single issue with my Evo yet, it still drives as good as new. A CMC and broken clutch fork wouldn't really make me sell the car, but I understand if you are not mechanically inclined and don't have the time or space to work on it.

I guess if I really had to I would choose the Ralliart. I be bummed if I had to downgrade the Evo to a Ralliart weep

Take the junk BRZ off your list... That's an overpriced car powered by a shitty Subaru engine, that gets beat by a Chevy Sonic around a skidpad and pumped by a Dodge Caravan with rust in a straight line.

Car is weak.
