So I have realized my can-tire soldering iron does work, but I m thinking 25 W and a bit of use just arent cutting it for a full on wire tuck with relocations and extensions. I have no real knowledge of proper soldering science and want this harness to be relatively bullet proof and of only the highest mike lane quality.
Im thinking I need a new iron. The bulky guns seem like a terrible idea? Here is a sort of condensed list of Wellers, as Anthony Hiscock recommended I get a 35 W Weller. Money is still an issue but if I am to get anything done I feel a new iron is necessary before I blow my brains out. I dont have enough Mary J for this kind of patience last joint I made (Electrical!) took me in excess of 15 minutes due to poor heat transfer. I might need a new tip, but this thing has seen very minimal use..

Best bang for my buck? Thoughts?:

I ll cough up a bit more $$ if I have to so I buy right the first time.

If you're just doing automotive wiring and joining wires i'd pick up a soldering gun. They get hot super fast and are much better for that type of work IMO. I have a cheap one from Can Tire that gets the job done with ease. If you plan to do some circuit board work then a pencil will work for dual duty but otherwise check out the guns!

While this might be a little off topic to original question... I found that for some of the heavier gauge wires (alternator for example) my little iron was not putting out enough out enough heat at once and was dissipating in the wire...

This trick works well https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7t9nT3Hn9b0

I had some extra 1 gauge wire I used the strands from...

^ I've used that method before, works great!

Buy a proper soldering gun. The little baby pencils are fine for circuit boards or 22 gauge wire.... but a good adjustable gun cant be beat.

I ended up buying this:
http://www.amazon.ca/Weller-WLC100-...13&sr=1-5&keywords=weller+solder

some rosin core solder, shrink tubes, and a real fancy set of wire holding alligator clips:

http://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B00...=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00

Been going to town on the harness the past few days! Still waiting on the Weller iron and the shrink tubes but I m not ready for that stuff yet. Got my spare harnesses sitting waiting for me to figure out what needs extending.

The Weller iron you ordered is only $40 USD (amazon.com) which means even with the shitty CAD you'd still only be at about 50-55 CAD. On the otherhand, that alligator clip stand is way cheaper on amazon.ca (surprisingly). Go figure.

Let us know how you like the new iron once you get your hands on it. It's rated as the #1 soldering product on amazon.com so must be pretty good. (Has top-notch ratings)

Thanks for that Sal! I was planning on grabbing one so I may just do it that way instead.

Sounds good guys! Yea that was some low effort shopping I did haha. Can tire had a flyer saying weller was on sale too right after that, whatever. Nothing like buying tools off the internet at like 1am to shorten a to do list smile

Making awesome progress, need to get my mind back in study mode :s
I ll be ready for an electrical mock up in the coming months to see if everything in fact still actually works shocked

Im excited to show it off when the mess is a little more sorted, so many hrs into this crazy thing. Amazing what kind of mess unsheathed wires find themselves in. But it all has been worth it in expanding my knowledge of the whole system, and to just move sensors around and reroute things before even contemplating cutting anything. The cruise control system removal (steering column buttons, dash switch, cruise computer, engine bay connector) has been the most confusing bit, as those wires lead back to random places. I think I need to rewire the TPS, and delete or repair oil pressure sensors. I ll run aftermarket ones anyway.

Lol sorry if I m off topic tongue
