I have the original aluminum alloy wheels on my 1990. After the most recent new tires I find that I lose about 1-2 psi per day with the air leaking around the tire bead. The tire guy blames it on the old rims which he says are dirty and corroded at the bead area. Is that possible and has anybody experienced this with old rims? What is the solution? I want to keep the car as original as possible so that I want to keep these wheels.
Thanks for any advice.

They should be able to dismount the tires and clean the rims.

+1.

Die grinder to clean them with the tire off.. Including the valve stem hole.

If you're mechanic can't afford one.. Hand him a piece of sand paper or steel wool.

If the wheels are actually pitted from corrosion then cleaning them off with a wire wheel wont help and the wheels either need to repaired or replaced.

Funny you mention this. I had a tire bead let go while I was away over the holidays. The -30 didn't help, but it wouldn't hold air more then 6 hours. Got it dismounted and remounted, VOILA! No more leaks smile

Have you confirmed it's leaking around the bead?

I had a tire which had a very slow leak and it turned out the wheel was cracked.

I think a wheel has to be pretty badly corroded for it to still not seal after a good cleaning. I would think this would be pretty rare!

I honestly do not see any "corrosion" but there is dried out old bead sealer patches on the rim all over the bead area.
Scott, how do you go about checking for a cracked wheel?

it's honestly around $20 per wheel at any tire shop to have the tire removed, rim checked for cracks, sanded down, reseal and remount. You'll find your answers there.

Soapy water and a spray bottle for tough to find leaks. Same idea for a boost leak.

Exactly this...and what the previous member said remove wheel die grinder with brush wheel and a new slab of that sealant/glue they use

Buddies car was loosing complete tire pressure in under a half hour removed tire cleaned and sealed and no issues going on a week now

In my case, the tire installer noticed the crack as he was installing a new tire.
