Hey everyone

I was just thinking about picking up some sparco seats from JRP and putting a 4-point harness on along with it. I know that it is really bad to mount the harness on the ground down the back of the front seats but i would still like to have the back seats functional for friends....has anyone done this? Its a 2g awd tsi if that makes a difference. Thanks

Jamie

If the seats have slots for the belts to go through, then it won't be too bad. Otherwise there will be nothing to keep the straps up near the top of the seat. When they run to the rear seatbelt tie points it helps keep them up.

The seats I am going to buy will have slots for the belts to go through...I just don't know where a safe place to tie the back of the belts to without getting in the way of the backseat passengers. And please spare me the "take your backseat out" speech because I need to have it...
I dunno if its possible to do this without interfearing...just wondering if anyone has done this

I talked to the chief of police in Barrie and he said that as long as its equal to stock or safer then they are fine...the only thing they can get you on is the inability to check your blind spot.

I doubt that you will be able to use your racing belt with rear passenger because the safe rear belt level is 30 degre from the horizontal (to the rear strut for exemple). You can't just tie the belt to the floor at the rear of the seat, that would be too dangerous in an accident.

Maybe you can keep your stock belt and use it when you have rear passenger. You would have to remove the rear section of the racing belt each time though...

You're kind of up the creek with this one, James.

If you don't use a harness bar behind the front seats, you'd have to tie the shoulder straps to the lap belt locations for the rear passenger seats. Since the straps most likely need to cross behind you, no one would be able to use the rear seat.

If you do use a harness bar, you could leave the rear seats untouched...but getting into the rear seats would be almost impossible. If you had an accident, the rear passengers may hit their heads on the harness bar. If the car was on fire, the rear passengers would also likely be trapped.

You might be able to use a harness with quick release clips for the rear tie points, so you could disconnect the shoulder straps when you want to put someone in the rear seat.

I use a harness with the stock seat when I autocross, but use the stock belt on the street.

Before you finalize your purchase, remove the belts from the box and make sure the mounting plates are installed on the belts correctly. If you've done enough research you'll know what I mean by this.

Disclaimer: Make sure you read up on all the safety issues regarding using a harness and racing seat without a rollcage or helmet.

EDIT: Hmm, you could use a harness bar behind the rear seats and run a harness with quick disconnects to the harness bar. You'll have to use the stock belt when someone is in the seat behind you.

It's also a bad idea to use more than a 3-point system if you don't have roll-over protection. The 3-point lets you get out of the way of your collapsing roof in case you flip. With a 4-point you are pinned to your seat and your head/neck are done for.

Just something else to think about.
