Hi

Yesterday I saw An Intake at Crappy Tire. I think it was a K&N. (The Guy told me so, but if he was knowing is sh!t, he was hiding it very well)
The Intake was complete, Filter, brackets, and a nice polished blue pipe.
My question is: Is there someone who knows
those intake: Does they use the OEM MAF, Do they worth their price, are they effective
improvement wise.

Thanks for your help, You DSM Wizz!

Yes, yes and yes.

K&N Filterchargers (replacement air filters) do not come with a pipe. I am not sure about Filtercharger Induction Performance Kits (FIPKs).

Most people find the FIPK is not worth it, but the Filtercharger (which just replaces the stock air filter) is the first thing most people do with their cars.

I already have a drop in K&N.
I was thinking about cutting my aircan, but a guy from the club told me that instead of
cutting it out, I would be better to take it completely out and use brackets to hold the filter at the place( I don"t know exactly what he meaned by those bracket), That's why
whwn I saw this Intake I' ve been interested.
The guy told me the prices was starting at
129,99$

So do I cut the aircan... Have a pipe bent, with the cutted aircan, .... Take the aircan
out and buy those brackets which I don't even
know whose making it.... or buy that intake at Crappy Tire....???

I think I' m a bit lost héhé.

Hey Man.

This is what I did. I cut the aircan and kept one bolt hole so the airfilter would not touch the structure of he car.

You can view it on my site; http://www.lks.net/~ghislisa/

Next in line will be to have a metal or aluminium pipe made. Don't pay top dollars for this stuff. Get yourself an other can and cut the thing. Have a metal pipe made by a muffler shop or a metal fabrication shop.

Hope this helps.

Ghislain.

I'm with Tony on this one. I'm planning on getting the filter bracket from Magnus. The FIPK from K&N does not actually come with the pipe from K&N. I've already contacted K&N about this and they said for the 1G NT (not sure for t's) that all you get is the filter and some hardware, no pipe. Keep the stock hose and replacing the air can with Magnus bracket is your best bang for your $$$.

Hi !!! I cut the can but not the back of it, to prevent a little bit of hot air (from the engine compartment) to enter. i say just cut the front of it. And you don't have to pay for brackets...

I have the turbo, the non turbo I think you may be able to get a fipk with the pipe but what for when u can get the bracket..

Oh yeah cutting only one side of the can, if your going to do that, is no good if you are going to do the MAS Mod, reason being tha filter doesnt absorb air evenly from all sides, I think thats the correct explanation, someone help me out here, im a newbie still..

There is no difficulty with partially cutting the aircan provided your MAS is modded correctly.

The only difficulty you will have with the MAS and aircan setup is if you (incorrectly) remove the 'honeycomb' material from the upper section of the MAS. This part is designed to smooth out the incoming airflow so that the Karmann airflow sensor operates correctly. Removing this part without making special provisions for the flow of incoming air (such as proper design of a modified aircan) will lead to erratic operation.

If you leave the upper honeycomb in place, you will have no difficulties. Removing the lower section will have no effect aside from possibly making your car run ever-so-slightly leaner, and delaying fuel cut a small bit. This is not dangerous since DSMs run quite rich in stock form.

There is some evidence, available at the 1000 AAQ page and the Digest archives, that shows that removing the entire aircan will significantly increases the intake air temperature regardless of vehicle speed. This would increase the occurence of knock in the engine and may lead to reduced timing. It may be a good idea to leave part of the aircan intact, or to install panels such as those used by Tom Stangl in his badly-named 'ram-air' project, to block underhood air.
