bump!

Guys I had an idea but I need your help to see if I'm right or not. Wes, Rob and whoever is having the same problem get yourself a mulitmeter and unplug the knock sensor. The main wireharness that comes out of the main ECU wire harness that plugs into the knock sensor is what you need to check. Its just behind the intake mani bracket. So check the voltage of this harness with the key in the ON position, you should get 8-11v. I myself got 5.6v. Post what you get.

I've looked in the manual but it's confusing. What color wires is your knock sensor hooked up to? I have two plugs in that area and I never hooked one of them up, never knew what it was for.

Did you throw out your A/C?
One of them is for A/C...

I'll re-post later today after I check the voltage.

You'll see the knock sensor plug/harness is clipped onto the back of the intake mainfold bracket, just below the main wiring harness. Its the female style plug that plugs into the knock sensor that you need to test. The wires should be black and white.

The AC one is a single wire without a fancy plug, that one is hanging there as well. I had it connected to the right one as well anyway.

Ok so I just got back from the hottest ride ever, because I was listening to my knock sensor output but had to have the fan off and windows closed. My silent lifters... yeah eh? HOLY CRAP they're loud through the speakers. Not LOUD, but in comparison to everything else, whoa. I can hear it idle, but I can clearly hear the lifters. They're loud. I got a check engine light. I also had no batteries for the logger. Will go for another test tonight with a logger.

Oh yeah at about 20psi I didn't feel anything, but I heard a pop that scared the crap out of my cause it came through my sub. Hopyfully this will all lead to something. I may have to buffer the knock sensor to my stereo though.

Looks like your problem is with the lifters, new ones should fix that.

If I have lifters as my problem, and mine are as quiet as can be... even the injectors ticking are louder... then I'd figure that's almost everyone's problem. I will change the oil to be sure I am not parting with vital engine components and then the knock sensor is comming off and I am tuning by ear.

Having the knock sensor hooked up to a stereo etc is awesome! cool

Do you just wire in an RCA connector? white -> positive; black -> negative?

Wes gave me this link a couple days ago about how to listen to your knock sensor, I'm gonna try and make a cable and hook it up to my laptop today.

I tried the RCA cable thing and I could hear stuff but you need a capacitor and resistor to be able to properly hear everything.

For the first time I can now hear my lifters in the morning. This (I'm thinking) is because it's the longest I've gone on the new motor without an oil change (2000+km).

So, I logged my drive to work. For the first 5 minutes or so I could feel the timing being pulled. Looked at the log afterwards and sure enough, 40+ knock sum on acceleration. After 10 minutes, everything was like normal again.

On another note, I have to thank my knock sensor last night - as much of a pain it may be:

I was messing with my AFPR (removing the fuel gauge due to a leak) and I left the vacuum line folded at one spot to gain access. I forgot to unfold this and proceeded to race around. I could feel the timing being pulled all over the place - I must have been knocking due to lack of fuel pressure because the FPR wasn't getting my full boost signal.

No knock sensor would have meant bomb for sure!

SO Rob your knock only happens when the engine is cold? are you using the 3g lifters?

I wouldn't quite say that as I still get some part-throttle knock when fully warmed up. It definitly knocks more when I can hear my lifters, and it'll knock at all RPMs (I should post another log). And yes, they are 3G.
