My check engine light came on last night, got it scanned today. This is the code that came up.
code P0125: Insufficient coolant tempurature for closed loop fuel control.

What does that mean? Could it have anything to do with why I'm getting horrible horrible gas mileage?

Your coolant temp sensor in the thermo housing isnt working or you got a bad connection. This is indeed your reason for bad gas milage. The ecu basicly dumps fuel in the engine untill its up to operating temperature. There are two sensors on that housing if you have a 1g, one is for the temp gauge, the other is for the ecu. Its the ECU sensor you want to worry about. There is only one sensor on 2g cars. If your talking 2gnt, I have no idea where the sensor is.

will this screw my engine over if not replaced right away? What's the best way to test this sensor?

you wont screw anything up, you will just be running rich all the time.

Its an easy fix. There is no reason why you should be running like this.

You might end up eventually killing your cat if it gets overheated with too much unburnt fuel.

I'm gonna call around in a few minutes and see if I can find someone around here that has one in stock. Only reason i'm asking if it will screw my motor over is if I can't get one untill monday.

You might foul both your plugs and your O2 sensor with all that fuel going in.

An O2 sensor costs about 130-150, plugs...depends what you get. If you do the work yourself you are ok, but I don't know how much a shop will charge to replace those.

Make sure that you get someone to log your O2 voltages to make sure that it is operating properly (log before and after replacing that coolant temp sensor).

Cheers
Trevor

which coolant temp sensor is it that I need? there's two of them I believe. One with an oval connector on the end and two pins in it, the other has a little L shaped piece of metal on teh end that a one wire push terminal plugs onto.

Which one is the one that controls the ECU?
