It is totally amazing just how much fun you can have for just $20! I had a blast, it being my first time and all. So now I have some legimate #s to post in my bio. Best of 8 runs was a 13.515 @ 101, with a 1.888 60' time. I heard AC and Giovanni had 12s baby! Way to go

I'm going to St Thomas on Saturday I think. It's the fall high school challenge. I'll go in the Colledge class like I did earlier this year . ------------------ -Quadcylla-92 Laser RS-T, FWD

Well I had a great time! I wasn't too happy with my times, my best was only a 14.757 @ eighty something mph, with a astonishing 60' of 2.34. I need to practice my driving. I thoght I would have been a bit faster with my mods, but then again...
Isn't the stock 1/4 mile time like a in the high 14's. I know my car is way faster than it was stock.. My mods are 2.25 uic pipe k&n 16g and stock exhaust, 15psi. Shouldn't I be faster?
If i can get my oil pressure gauge problem (hopefully that's all it is) fixed I would love to go on Sat! st thomas is a bit far isn't it though? But if that's where everyone is going I'll go there.

Okay,
So who rocked the house?
What was the outcome of the AC-PPG-AndyB grudge match?
I was too busy messing with the all-motor CRX...

Hey Vince Don't lose hope! If there's one thing I learnt last night is that fine tuning makes the hugest difference. When I got there last night I was on a mission to sort out my street setup (read pump gas & 18-19psi). My car was running like sh!t and I wasn't sure why. Anyway, first run was 14.2@103 with a 2.2 60ft. A couple of runs later I was getting the 60 fts down to consistent 2.0s (had one freaky 1.9s) but the car still wasn't pulling. EGT's were telling a different story to the O2s. WTF? So I dumped the O2 readings in favour of the EGTs and tuned from there. Added a little timing and by the end of the night I ran 12.9@108.4. The car was still a little rich at the top (about 820C at the top of 3rd) but was feeling a lot better through the gears. All that change from some fine tuning! As for the 60ft time, well, I've obviously got some work to do since I was launching at a stuttered 5,250 rpm! Maybe the 18 inch wheels are not a good choice for racing! All in all, it was a very productive night since I got at least 12 runs in. Much better value than the Saturdays when the track is full of cars. ------------------ Cya O! SPOOLIN!

Well Lionel, AC was the top time... but we think he was cheating. We saw some cash changing hands with the guy in the timing booth, so we're not sure. Personal best of 13.3 @ 108... so I'm happy. But I still can't launch to save my life... ------------------ Andrew Bienhaus1997 Eagle Talon TSi AWD - The Mongoose is loose!

Well thanks for the encouragement Giovanni, I wish I could tune my car with the help of an after market computer (eventually ) On your 12.9 run I was in the stands watching, I could hear your turbo spooling up even over the rumble of the v8 car ( I forget what it was) you were racing. You almost beat him I bet he was suprised. I just thought I would have been faster since the stock 1/4 mile is around low 15's and people here say they can run mid 14's with just a k&n, UIC pipe and 15psi of boost on a stock exhaust? I must be a really bad driver. I don't understand I got one ticket 14.757 @ 86.8mph and another ticket said 14.578 @ 94.5 mph. How could I run the same time but be a 8mph difreence between the 2? The 14.757 had a 60' of 2.2 and the 14.758 had a 60' of 2.3. (and I won't talk about my 16 second pass) Oh well. So who is going to St thomas on Sat? ------------------ 91 Eagle Talon TSi AWD [This message has been edited by Vince Amato (edited September 28, 2000).]

Unless you have LOTS of power, you'll be losing big time with larger wheels. They almost eliminate wheelspin, though. (:
Vince, the DSM's are one of the few cars that I've seen where you can line 10 stock cars together, and get 10 different performances. You might just have a 'weak' car, and you'll have to find out why.

As I understand it, the larger wheels are a disadvantage in drag racing, particularly at the launch (ie. when you're trying to get traction). This is because the profile of the tire leaves very little rubber wall between the hard rim and the road. This results in less flex (a "harder" contact with the ground) which, when generating enough power, is much easier to lose traction on than with a "softer" contact as provided with a higher profile tyre. Note, this assumes width, compound, etc. are constant. Doing the mathematics between a 225/40/18 tyre and a 225/50/16 tyre results in the 18 inch tyre having: (1) 0.008% (15mm) more diameter; but (2) 7.5% less tyre wall as a proportion of total wheel radius. Hence the use of low pressure fat slicks by the racers. ------------------ Cya O! SPOOLIN!

Smaller radius wheels will accelerate easier but have a lower max speed. Larger diameter wheels have a high top speed but accelerate slower. It all has to do with the amount of work the engine has to do... there's much less work to do when starting from stop on a smaller diameter wheel. Think about the distance per revolution. It's easier for a smaller diameter to turn 1 revolution cuz the distance travelled (work) is less. I don't have a real grip on the physics but thatt's the general idea. ------------------ -Quadcylla-92 Laser RS-T, FWD

Mike's right, Giovanni's wrong. Well, kinda. The flex might have SOMETHING to do with it, but not much.
The larger wheel is much harder for the motor to turn from a stop due to it's larger radius. Think of pedaling a 10spd bike with the smaller cog by the pedals, then the larger one. The larger one is great for cruising at high speed, but can't accelerate for crap unless you're an Olympic cyclist.
