Hey guys, I'm thinking about buying a friend's older Audi S4 with 18" rims wrapped with 225/40s, but I'm nervous about the tires. He's received two flats from hitting potholes on his last two road trips. Is this to be expected from having tiny sidewalls or is it just bad luck. I don't know
anyone else who runs 18s so any experience first or second hand would be great.
Cheers,
G

Usually you're more likely to bend a rim than to get a flat tire, but it's probably not a fluke. Do you know what kind of tires are on there and what the speed rating on them is?

Yeah, the tire type has a lot to do with it. A touring tire will be more forgiving.

Stay away from Nova Scotia, though...

The tires are Potenza S-02s, and they have a Z rating.

Keith your car is an NT right? It must weigh in about 3000lbs. This fat bastard Audi is closer to 3800.

Your point about Halifax is well taken Troy, it's insane that you can destroy rims easily on potholes on the main highways.

I want this car so bad I can taste it, but I'd be tempted to trade down for a set of 17s. Too bad the bolt patterns are different for DSMs...

Yup, the S-02's are definitely a performance tire. Touring tires can be Z-rated as well, but they have a softer sidewall.

I'm sure that you could easily find someone that would trade you 17" for 18" in the Audi's bolt pattern. (:
