I was going to replace the rear pads today but I ran into a little glitch. For some reason, I think the rear calipers were put on incorrectly. After I get the slide pin out and the e-brake cable out (quite a pain in the a#@) I can't just flip the caliper up because the little bracket that holds the e-brake cable will smack against the hub preventing it from rotating up.

Unfortunately I left my factory manual CD at school and I checked the vfaq and couldn't find a picture of the rear caliper. If someone has one can they send me a picture of the rear caliper setup at REDACTED.

Just to make sure...

1990 and 1991+ calipers are DIFFERENT. (the location of the e-brake bracket is different)

make sure that they didn't install the wrong one.

That said, you usually have to take off the e-brake cable and the bracket to do your rear pads.

According to the book it should just flip up. Also, the ebrake cable should 'slide' out of the bracket and then you take the head out of the little round hole thing, undo the slide pin and flip it up. I had to remove the bracket and then fight the head to get it to come out of it's hole.

A picture of the caliper/rotor would be nice

If it's just the handbrake cable bracket getting in the way, then take off the braket. It's held on with one bolt I think.

Btw, the proper order is:

1) unhook cable head from handbrake arm by prying back on the arm to give yourself slack. Take safety clip out first of course.

2) slide the cable out of its bracket towards the front of the car. Be very careful with the rubber boot cause if you damage it you'll end up with a seized cable like me.

3) take out the lower caliper bolt and swing her up.

I just pulled the head of the cable out of it's round hole and undid the bolt, I couldn't get that cable to slide out of that hole at all.

So that bracket does face the front of the car? And the bleeder nipple on the caliper faces up correct?

I'm confused. Do you still have a problem?
Did you or did you not get the e-brake cable completely free of the caliper assembly? If the cable's attached to the bracket you obviously can't flip the caliper up.

It's not too hard to get the cable out of the bracket. Loosen up the rust with some penetrating oil and pliers, then pull on the cable towards the front of the car and maybe simulateously push from the back. The cable's stiff, that's the only reason it's hard to move it forward.

But the easiest thing if the bracket's really hitting the hub is to remove the bracket.

The e-brake cable is free from the caliper assembly but I wasn't sure that the caliper assembly was correct because I couldn't flip up the caliper without removing the e-brake bracket.
