I went racing today and now I can't keep my car in second. It goes into second fine, but as soon as I release the clutch, it grinds and pops back out. Is my Synchro likely gone? Do I need a full tranny rebuild? Does anyone know how much something like this costs?
Thanks, Reza 97 F2 TSi AWD

Ouch buddy powershifting huh Thats my symptoms from cayuga last year. I ended up just buying a used tranny from JAP because a rebuild was a minimum of $1000 and the car would have been out for at least 3 weeks. With the used tranny, I just had it in for a day or two. Marco fixed it afterwards for a spare for him, but he never told me what broke. ------------------ Purple Plymouth Guy 1992 Laser AWDDSMentia support group leader... so many mods, I don't remember if its 20G or 20g's[This message has been edited by Mark PPG Scheitzbach (edited May 27, 2000).]

How much was the rebuilt tranny from JAP and how much did it cost to install?
Also, do you have a number for JAP?

The weird thing is , 2nd and 4th share synchros. Why don't I have a problem with any other gears?
Could this be a worn shifter linkage or lever, or a busted one from me trying to shift fast and hard!!!

I thought Marco had told we it wasn't the synchros after he fixed it... Its the downtime that bothered me the most. Mark,
Was $900 the price for the transmission and install or junt transmission? And do you have a number for JAP?
Thanks,

No shop will rebuild a tranny for less than $1000. Famous last words. Ok, well I should preface, that I went into MY tranny rebuild, from the opposite spectrum. Rather than pop in some used tranny, that had no known history, I chose to seek out the source of the problem. (mine was popping out of 1st, same symptoms though) I knew that it could get expensive, but it might not be too bad. It would depend on finding the source of the problem, and counting on nothing else being broken. Since (like yours) every other gear was just fine, (and had been driving fine for 3 months after 1st went south) I went ahead. Answer: Worn bearings. Both sides of the shaft. Replaced the bearings, and it's been fine ever since. I know Marco and Arnel were a little aprehensive going into it, but once the solution was determined, we all felt better. So, knowing this... see what Arnel says, before you drop the wad on a new/used tranny. ------------------ Andrew Bienhaus - Web-Team Dude1997 Eagle Talon TSi AWD

AB, that is what the shop told me over the phone as well. Did your tranny have to be torn apart? How much was the final cost?
Thanks, Reza

I wish I could remember... because in the end, they also put in an ACT 2600 while they had it apart. The removal and teardown wasn't too bad though, as I recall. The bearings weren't cheap, but I was happy in the end. (which is the objective, right?) I'd say though, that you may want to be careful where you take it. Feel like a holiday in Toronto? No, really... knowing that these are a japanese design, that probably few shops have ever torn apart... I'd be looking for someone who has done the job already. ie: Arnel comes to mind... ------------------ Andrew Bienhaus - Web-Team Dude1997 Eagle Talon TSi AWD

OK, the transmission is open and the shop tells me that a broken 1-2 shift fork damaged my second gear AND the synchros are all worn AND my clutch's friction material is burnt off. To do the Transmission overhaul would cost $2400-$3100
I called JAP, and they say they have a used tranny for $1550. And they have no refurbished ones and if they did , it would be $3000... WTF???
I thought rebuilt trannies were $900. What happened?
Help please?????
