My oil pressure light comes on after a good 30 minute highway drive, and only at idle (typically at a stop sign/light) with the gear in neutral, or even stopped in first, with the clutch in.

From searching the DSM archives on dsm.org, I have come to the conclusion that it is the oil pressure sending unit.

My Talon is a '98 TSi AWD 5-Spd, which is still under factory warranty (it's a 5 year Chrysler Gold Plan warranty).

On the turbo's, there are two sensors comprising the oil pressure sending unit - an analog (for the actual gauge) and a digital - for the actual light on the dashboard (an on/off switch if you will).

The component that I believe is defective now (I have about 78 000 kms on my '98) is the digital (on/off) sensor switch.

I brought in the Talon to the dealership for a diagnostic, and $49.95 later they tell me they think it's the on/off switch (i.e. the digital sensor). They're not 100% sure, but I believe it's got to be the way to go.

The part w/ labour is about $80 - so I'm going to go ahead and do it.

Does anyone else have any ideas? And I'm curious as to why this doesn't fall under the warranty?

Cheers.

My '97 was doing this for a bit but then it stopped.... I just ignored it. Pay attention to the actual gauge though... if there is a problem it will show you a better reading.

Although it is possible to be showing oil pressure with not enough oil in the car, Adrian's right. Heh, that 'switch' only cost me $20CDN from Conicelli, though.

For those that have a 'flickering' light at idle, here's a thought. Our engines idle at around 10-15psi, which is pretty low. With my idle problems, I've seen 5psi, and my light *still* doesn't flicker...

Mat, the only time you should have to pay for anything under warranty is if they don't find anything wrong, and even then! I would suggest a quick call to Chryco and ask them what they think (shudder...)
Sheesh, what the hell do they think warranty means! [Linked Image]

Mat, my '97 TSi had the exact same problem last year, and the problem was with the dash display oil pressure sending unit. The dealer did no expensive diagnostic check on my car. I told them that the oil light flickers at idle when the car is warm, they agreed with my suggestion that it should be the display sending unit, and simply ordered it. I had the sending unit replaced under warranty (I have the 5 year Chrysler Gold Plan warranty as well).

Under the original warranty plan for my '90 (7/115) you had to pay $100 for each warranty repair...

The $100 one would have to pay is the deductible from the warranty. Of course, if the repair was under $100, you had to pay up until that point. Anything after was covered.

Well, I called good 'ol Chrysler Canada, and they confirmed that the sending unit WAS under warranty (warranty code 324 FYI) so I contacted the dealer and informed them.

Thanks for the replies... if you guys hadn't replied and told me it was covered under your warranties, I would have let it slip... thanks!!!

No problem, Mat. My extended warranty was the Chrysler "Gold 164 Plan", and carried no deductible at all. I had a bunch of stuff replaced under that warranty (cd player, horn, sending unit, multi-function switch, ball joints, wheel bearing, valve cover, and cylinder head and valve work). It's a shame the warranty's gone.... I'm at 103,000kms.

Bottom line is... don't let 'em push you around, and do your homework. Right Troy? [Linked Image]

Mat, my 95 has the identical symptoms as you have. However I noticed that at 750-800rpm (idle) it flickers, but if i simply tap on the throttle and keep it at a steady 900-1000rpm the light goes off? WTF?

Let us know if the sending unit fixes your problem. Is this sending unit right beside the filter? Is it hard to replace?

I am going to order one and see if it solves the problem.

Shhhhh, Troy....... Every piece of wood in my house is dented from all the knocking....!!! And haven't even installed the Big 16G yet... man, I am going to lose years off my life over this..!! [Linked Image]

About the flickering oil light, the archives are full of posts on the subject and the results are almost always the same - the display sending unit. My car did the same thing too, Mark, until the sending unit was replaced.
