I searched the archives and couldn't find anyones feedback on how easy this process is per the VFAQ. Is it as simple as it sounds? What are the odds of a rocker arm flying off? Any extra steps you would recommend? How long did it actually take?

it is not that hard at all.. it took me about 1 to 2 hours to change all 16. But a few tip.. do make sure to plug any small place where the rocker can get into inside the head. I had a hard time getting them back out after smile And place a piece of cloth right over the rocker you are tring to get off and it wont fly anywhere..

I have replaced one lifter so far smile

It was winter and I decided that I could do this in the cold....it started to snow and I said screw it I'll to it when it gets warmer.

You have to use a bit of muscle to get the roller rocker on and off, mine popped off and went flying across the driveway. Getting it back in you should use a long flathead screwdriver to push it back in.

yes Mike, doing the lifters isn't too difficult. It would help to get a big flathead screwdriver (somehting over a ft long) to pry the lifters out. Be carefull not to dent/chip the head.

i took the ones on my galant off for cleaning. The rockers tend to go flying when you pry them off..so dont loose them. Also plug up your oil return holes in the head....if a rocker get in there....u are SOL.

Putting them on is harder than getting them off (well isn't everything so). You mihgt find getting to the far left rockers a little hard. Romoving the 'oil distributing thing' may help a bit. Also when putting them in, use a long rachet handle (i used a breaker bar) and leverage against it (er..use as a fulcrum pt.)instead of the corners of the head.

So you all agree that this way is better, easier, safer then going ahead and taking the belt and cams off?

Im worried about wrecking something or scratching.

all lifters are the same??

I have seen a picture of old style lifters beside newer ones, and the newer ones have a much bigger center oil passage.

Isn't this what we are talking about? replacing the old ones with new 2g lifters??

but I am new to these cars, I may have been mislead...

The new style lifters are a replacement for all 4g63 engines. This style came "stock" starting in '97, but the new Part No. covers all years.
