The gears are chipped, thats the noise. A rebuild would probably not be the best bet as metal would have gone through the bearings, who knows how many of the gears are chipped, etc.

Had it out one day, and busted the trans.

What are my choices? I cannot rebuild this? Does this mean I have to go with a used/new one?

hey mike, this is nathan, well i know 2G transmissions are the same except for mounting brackets

so i think it would be possible to pick up a 93-94 tranny and swap brackets, (welding ect) and use it, if not go to a wreckers and get the tranny out of a wrecked car

THIRD OPTION THE BEST IDEA

dont mess around get a TRE transmission built, they arnt that much, and i am considering building one, seach for a link online, easy to find, they build full-race to just a smooth shifting unit like the factory should have installed!!

You could rebuld any tranny, but is it worth it?

Good luck finding a good 1G tranny.

Could someone also let me know if there's any differences between the 95-96 and the 97-99 trannys?! Thanks.

Send your tranny to John Sheppard (www.shepracing.com), he's a little cheaper than TRE I belive and guys are saying great things about his turnaround time etc...

The '97+ tranny has a different front differential ratio than the earlier years.
The transfercase has a different ratio to account for it.
If you can get an earlier tranny and matching transfercase combo, you can use them.

The tranny housing may still be useable but everything else is probably screwed now. I'd take it apart and see what you've got.

A brand new tranny from Mitsu is just under $3k (gulp). You do get a clutch fork and slave cylinder with it though laugh .

Just got quoted $2,500 from Mitsu.. that's with a 1year warranty which isnt too shabby.. ALTHOUGH I can get a TRE tranny with upgraded bearings and syncros for $1,800usd (same price in the end) but only 30-day warranty.. I don't know what to do.. I`ll prolly go with the 1year from Mitsu to save myself downtime and hassle.

A new slave cylinder is reason alone to get one!

The TRE one will be way better, especially if you will be putting down some horsepower.

I certainly will be.. currently about 350hp at the wheels. I've put some though into this today. Although the tranny in my '97 has been there for about 6 years now, it's been getting worse lately due to grinding and hard-shifting. It may have lived longer if proper bearing and syncro's have been used to pro-long the failure.

Assuming my theory is correct, a TRE tranny with upgraded syncro's may live up to abuse a bit longer due to the fact that grinding and hard-shift may be pushed back further due to non-existant grinds and bad shifts.

I may end up going with the TRE route after-all, thx for the 2nd opinion(s) on this.

.. ahem!, anybody in-need of a 2g awd 5spd case? lol.
