I've had this oil cooler sitting on my shelf for over a year and today I decided it's about time I fabbed up some fittings.

So I cut off the hard lines off both lines. Then tapped and threaded 2x barbed brass fittings.

What do you guys think?

What kind of hose are you going to use?
I don't know if it'll be too much pressure on that setup...

I do think you need a time-out from Princess Auto though wink

Just FYI Chris, you can always get princess to put together some hydraulic lines for that bad boy too ;P They're very reasonble when pressing together hose, normally if you buy the connector, they'll crimp it to the hose for free.

I personally think that using those Banjo Fitting is an excellent idea but not sure if the Barb setup will hold.

You could keep the Banjo Fittings and get some Falre to AN-X Adapror and run some $$ Braided Lines, a little more but could prove a bit more reliable on the long run.

Ghislain.

Keep in mind that you have up to 80-100 psi going through the lines. here is what i have done.

I think it'll hold better than my current setup. It's similar to a power steering cooler line.

I'll see if they hold once I get my car running again freak laugh

you could get lines and fittings fo like 40 bucks on ebay.i bought 2 lines that were longer than i needed them to be and cut them to the nesecesary lenght,
they came from a nascar car so they had all of the fitting ready to bolt on the oil cooler that sr giz gave me (wich is the same one you have), i cant remember the name of the store but if you look you wont desapointed.
here is how it look now:

hmmmm that much pressure through there eh....
I did basically what he did but didn't bother with the barbs, just left some line and double clamped it, all I had at the time and it NEEDED to be done...
Of course I have used high pressure line, has held no problems, no leaks for at least 7 months now.

Manuel, is it just the angle of the picture or do those lines sit REALLY low?

Arent those fittings a bit too small for oil flow?
-8an lines have a .4" ID.
And i'd be really worried about those things blowing off.

Don't Worry if you hose clamp those they wont blow off. A.N this A.N that Its B.S Ive used barb fittings for years and have never once had one blow off I even used barbs for my water alky setup up to 150 psi. Just make sure you use hose thats rated for the pressure your going to run and make sure its oil resistant.

I do agree that the size is small though, then again the actual stock lines are not overly big are they?

Good luck Chris

I actually just placed a hose order, and was reading the specs. They listed the -8 hose as having an ID of .44 (7/16"). Maybe it is to stretch over a 1/2" fitting? Or maybe 1/2 is just the "nominal" size, and 7/16 is the "actual".

Actually, that shows you the OD of the rigid metal tubing that would be used in certain applications. It doesn't say much to the ID of SS hose.

Each dash size for AN, MS and NAS equals to 1/16" ID.

So an AN-8 has a 1/2" ID size. That is comon value used in the Aviation world and that is where the automotive standard/sizing comes from.

Ok, but those are "nominal" values for the OD size that the hose stretches over. I just pulled out my vernier and some parts and checked, and the -8 hose DOES have an ID of about .45, and the fitting where the hose goes over has an OD (over the threads) of .55, but the ID of the tube portion that goes inside the hose is only .365. This means that a -8 fitting, while the nominal might be 1/2", is restricted down to 3/8". Similarly, I just measured a -6 fitting, and the ID of the tube portion there is a mere .27, not much over 1/4".

I never measured it myself but that is what our "standards" are refering to. Like you said these are probably some nominal values.

You can see as much as 150psi at the oil pump when starting on a cold morning.

I think that barb setup will work if you clamp the hoses down really well. I'd watch it like a hawk for the first while, though, and cold test it a few times to try it at max. psi.

I've measured it and thats what it was.
Here's a -6 fitting, its .7cm or .275" or 9/32", and not 3/8".

Kevin is 100% correct the barbed fitting will hold fine with a hose clamp and the proper hose. Go to an industrial supply or hydraulic store and buy some Parker hose, it's not expensive. BTW you can also do the same for fuel line with Parkers PushLoc fittings

I am glad this thread started... I got a free 90 cooler and lines and the lines are kinked a few inches from each fitting so im gonna try the same thing tap the banjo fittings and thread some barb fittings in there with some high pressure line and some hose clamps.

Hey Chris... what size tap and barb fittings did u use? if you dont mind telling me and saving me experimenting haha.

Thanks Alot!

Harrison, those barb fittings are probably 1/4" NPT.
In any case, just get the NPT barb fitting that is the right size for the banjo, and tap with the respective NPT tap.

Time bombs! haha

I guess we do own dsms and there are alot of people that just git r done.

Well here is the other part to the solution... Is there any way to straighten the bent lines without cracking them? They are kinked pretty badly.

Thanks

So i ended up not being able to repair my kinked stock lines and went to a hydraulic shop and bought these crazy press n lock fittings that are engineered and garunteed to 250 psi with NO hose clamp! The line is very thick and rated to 1250 psi.

See How it goes!!

umm it cost me 40 bucks with the line and fittings, as far as labour i did it myself. they are just push lock fittings. Place in Oakville Called Fluidlyne they do good work and prices are decent.

Thanks

It looks OK, but I'd be worried about the rubber lines resting against something...
Have to be pretty careful with that.
