Ok I have done as much reading as I can handle on this subject. And have come to the conclusion this is what I want to do.

I want to get a complete turbo engine with head, tb injectors etc. Just like i got my new n/t engine.

so if the engine i purchase is complete in the sense that if i was putting it in a tsi i would just have to connect all the wires, vac lines, sensors etc. What would I need to do to my n/t to make it a drop in swap like that.

From my self education this is what i have come up with:

I will need (if complete tsi engine is used)

ECU
MAF
DOWNPIPE
INTERCOOLER AND PIPING
WIRING HARNESS ????
FUEL PUMP (PROBABLY GO FOR A 255LPH WALBRO)
KNOCK SENSOR
FPR
RESISTOR PACK ? (I'M NOT SURE WHAT THIS DOES OR WHERE IT GOES)
FUEL LINES???
MBC OR BOOST CONTROL SOLENOID
S-AFC??
DATALOGGER
KEEP N/T FLYWHEEL TO USE MY TRANNY WITH TSI MOTOR

That's a very sketchy list. Do you plan on keeping the car like a stock turbo version or do you want to modify it afterward?
If you want to mod it, how much power do you want?

I think by resistor pack you mean "Power Transitor". In which case it should come with your engine. It is on the drivers side near the coilpack (I keep wanting to say it's bolted on the intake, but it's been a couple months since I did my swap).

Also - do up a cost comparison of this swap vs. selling your car and getting a TSi.

From VFAQ: http://www.angelfire.com/il2/freestyle/turboconversion.html

A good read, good for the list of parts and actaully doing the work on the car. A few things I dont agree with like the oil squrter issue, they are there for a reason. No real need for a clutch ASAP uless your current one is slipping, but be prepared to change it soon

1990 TSi AWD - Parked since I bought it (Jan24/03)
Had it out one day, and busted the trans.

Well not only the cost comparison, but the quality comparison. Like if i sold my esi and bought a tsi, I don't want to have to put 2000$ into the engine becuase it hasnt been properly maintained. Where as if i bought a jdm engine with low kms theres less to worry about. So what should i do guys? Also my car is in great shape, no rust, never seen a winter. Also what kind of dfference should i expect on insurance rates if i were to sell and get a tsi? And if selling and buying a tsi is a better way to go does anyone have one thats been looked after and is up for sale come spring. Basically I'm, looking for something in good shape for 6000$ and under. As I could spend s couple g's on my esi to make it a turbo, or sell it and use the money towards a tsi. So someone hook me up here i don't want to do something i'll regret.
