I have the chance to pick up a nice pretty low km non turbo fwd 1g .It isn't running guy thought timing belt went but the belt is still on there and the engine turns over by hand.

Are these non turbo fwd cars even interference engines like our 2.0 cars.?

So thinking since it stopped suddenly I think its maybe something simple like fuel pump or fuse on the injectors or something..And can pick it up for under a grand.Body has no rust..interior is nice..standard..and its a 92 laser.Thinking it would make a nice flip.Use the money I make to get more mods for my awd.Or give it to my daughter she needs a car.

So anything about these 1.8 that I should know.Any big problem areas..??

From personal experience, I can say it's the most reliable DSM ever built laugh

It's a 8 valve SOHC non-interference engine.

Slow as hell (96hp).

The only major problem I ever had with my 1.8 was when the automatic transmission died at about 260,000km. Everything else was normal maintenance.

Nice find tu

Non turbo doesn't mean 1.8
but if it is a 1.8 as Rob said is an 8 Valve which I think is non interference.

if the engine cranks and the valves are hit then you would hear the noise. I now sure about out west but these things don't have such a high price anyways.

The car is like buried in snow and can't even read the engine today.Did they make different engines in the 92 non turbo lasers fwd.

I will be taking another look at it in few days if weather cooperates.

Actually dsms are very sellable out here.
I paid 3300 for my car and had offers of 5000 the same day and guy would have went at least another 1000 to 1500 higher.

Non turbos can go like 3000 here. But we have stupid safety inspections to contend with also.

I am thinking since see some great prices of cars on the board it might be worth my time to buy them and ship them out here.Assuming they aren't solid rustbuckets since eastern cars can be really bad for that although these dsms don't seem to rust bad.At least the 92 on but maybe the ground effects is just covering the damage.

The engine appeared to have only one timing gear not two.Really it was completely snow covered.

Still body is supposedly excellent and interior looked good .Think I might have to take a chance on it.

And if its not a 1.8 but a 2.0 then you guys on board always seem to have lots of cheap parts.

I just sold my ESi for $5000. I would really think twice before bringing one in from down east. I have seen quite a few cars all 97+ that I sure wouldnt buy, Id hate to see what another 5-7 years adds onto that.

I dug the car out a bit more and its a 1.8.Pretty sure 150,000 km.The exterior is excellent no rust and the interior is dirty but otherwise good. Its a 5 speed.I am not sure exactly what options it has.
The car just died on the guy and this other guy I know bought it off him and doesn't want to bother looking at it right now..he needs some cash.So could likely pick it up for 800 bucks max.
Its supposedly a 92 but has the flip up lights. Its a laser not a talon or eclipse.

And this car is local Chris and don't need safety .I am thinking should be a good deal and maybe its a minor problem after all not that much km and thinking maybe something like a fuse or fuel pump alternator..stuff like that.If the 1.8 is for sure non interference then that is even better. It still has the belt on the top pulley anyway.

Allan,

Sounds like a faulty ECU if you ask me...

If that turns out to be the case, I pulled the ECU from my 1.8 before dropping her off at the wreckers. The car was an auto, not sure if that matters in this case.

Rob,

Not in this case your ECU is same manual or auto...
