Ian that's odd, i'd thought it was just me. I've spend hours, if not days trying diffrent shapes and sizes for it's air-space, by blocking off portions of the body, sealing it, venting it, porting it. I've used tubes of silicone, cans of expansion foam, and net net, it still sounds like a$$ IMO. No matter what I try, it never seems to improve.
Everyone sits in it and is impressed, but it's just the low fill from the sub and the loud tweeters in the dash that's saving the system from being a total waste IMO...the voice and mid-range is muddy and little base. From a set of DVC 400$ 6x9's it was a real let down, which I really wasn't expecting. It was my first car I had room for ultra large 6x9's, and I was going to try and run without a sub. I've bi-amped them with a sizeable Alpine amp, tried a million cut-offs...but there's simply something wrong with that location (at least in my car).

Paul, I agree as well. $250 Alpine 6x9's, and they sound pretty crappy back there...no bass response at all...I really can't understand it.
With the subs, the stereo still sounds awesome, but without subs, it would suck hard.

Thanks Jon, that's really interesting that the 1G's suffer the same fate. It's annoying, and the 6x9's could (and should) be far better in the upper base region and reproduce a mid-bass that the systems tend to lack. Mike, "gently hammered" lol...didn't know there was such a thing! When I break out a blunt nosed instrument to "modify" a panel, there's very there "gently" in me left So I beat the hell out of mine...But my magnets are larger than most 10" subs use, and with the DVC connections on the back it was all too easy to short them out. I had a car stereo shop custom make a speaker box with 2 6X9 angled with the rear window that sat in the cargo space in the 84 Turbo Laser. It was the width of the rear deck and covered with black naugahyde. Looked good too. It left less space for groceries but sounded great with the other 6 ways. And you could unclip the speaker wires like a home stereo and take it out if you needed the space or to get at the spare tire. If you go that route just remember to remove the speaker grilles occasionally and gently vacuum the road dust off the speakers.
Beats using a hammer and you get the sound.
Cheers Tony

Thanks for the input guys, I got them to fit. I used some bolts as spacers behind the speaker mounts, but by doing this the stud bolts were to short so I used a dremel to countersink some holes. I was still a little short on the clearance, so I slightly hammered the fenderwell. Sounds good, but they are used for high's and some mid.

Hey,
I am gonna redo the system in my car. I am using an Alpine Head unit runningn 3 RCAs to the amps. I have 1 Sony 4 way and 2 RF 200.1 amps. I am running stock speakers all around. I have eliminated the factory amp (under the passenger seat) and used caps to remove some of the bass going to the 6x9s. I have 2 RF subs each being powered by it's own RF amp. In the new setup i am gonna strip the car completely. i am removing all the seats. I am gonna run new wiring and reuse the same rca wiring. remove all the old speaker wiring and run new 12 gauge speaker wire. Sell all th eamps and maybe the subs and invest in a RF 5 channel amp or maybe a Rf 4 channel and a BD 500 amp for two new RF subs. Also get RF speaker package to replace all stock speakers. Remove the 6x9 and place them somewhere else. Use strobe lights in the place where the old 6x9s were. get a good set of crossovers and eliminate all bass to the tweeters (in case bass decides to take them out), remove some bass from the sqawkers and add some deep bass to the subs. Then add a Screen and hook up the PS2 and hopefully invest in the new NF2 Underground where you can drag race in the 1/4 mile. (Sweeeeeeeeeeeeeet)
Maybe I am even interested in selling my old system for a reasonable offer. I also have all receipts to clarify they are not stolen and they are newer than mentioned. Serious inquirers email me.
