My dad is sick of beaters so he is finally going to be looking at a decent vehicle.
Looking for something comfortable, reliable, not to complicated, good resale value. Room for cargo is also important and good on gas for its category.
I recommended him to buy a mazda 3 hatch or a toyota corolla or camry even.
Any suggestions?

...or, put that 10000-15000 into your talon(s) and make them reliable... if you can possible say as such that could be a really nice down payment on a new lancer... 10 YEAR WARRANTY, new, reliable, good on gas and fully loaded for 20g's? thats hard to beat

Its not my money but its a nice thought!
My dad is weary of Mitsubishi as he has seen the trouble I have had with my cars. They do seem to be a good price although 10 year warranty means nothing as the km's will be surpassed easily before that the way my family drives.
I put his name in for a brochure.

Lancer only gets 29 Mpg highway rating, thats horrible compared to cars in its class.

Hyundais are getting to be a very good sedan.
I think it is the Magentis (or something like that) that is pretty fancy, but also very affordable and reliable.
My uncle loves his. Even if you only keep it as long as it has warranty, Hyunai has quite a long warranty now.

I think for your dad's everyday needs, this rear wheel drive fun stick stuff is out the window, isn;t it ?
If I were in market, I would SERIOUSLY look at Hyundais, they have descent quality and in fact in some ratings beat toyota which made Toyota pissed(and spank their quality people)
Sonata might be too expensive new but a pretty choice, older models maybe? I know the accent is a very simple car!
and if you want resale, I guess Corolla or Civic is the way to go. and they do have good mileage and what not. I dislike those newer Corollas like they ate my cake but practically they are ok cars.

I guess none of you actually READ what Adam wrote in his first post. His criteria eliminates most sports cars, any new car, and most 'fancy' cars. Unfortunately, his criteria of 'good resale value' and reliable make it hard to choose a used car as well.
The '99 to '04 Passat (especially wagon) would be perfect. He'd love it. Unfortunately, I'd have to call it down for reliability and complexity.
Your call on the Mazda3 wagon was good. A Matrix would be better, but both might be found a bit wanting for overall cargo room. They're wagons, but they're SMALL wagons.
I think he'd like the 4 cylinder Accord or Camry. Decent cargo room for sedans, with good gas mileage. A Volvo wagon would also make the cut...
