While driving today my car stopped accelerating. I pulled over and the first thing that came to mind was my clutch is toast, but after jacking my car up I noticed that the carrier bearing came apart and the axle is hanging loose. If I try to accelerate my car only revs up but dosen't budge. Is my transmission or vc toast. Any advice on what I should check.

Well, I had my driver's side axle pop out once and my car wouldn't move. It could be one of your axles are simply popped out as well... You might want to fix the carrier bearing and loose axle you mentioned before jumping to expensive conclusions, though. It wouldn't hurt.

Forgot to mention that I went under my car and noticed that the bolts for the carrier bearing have snapped and there's no way to extract the broken ends from the bolts in that small space. Seems like I'm screwed either way. Do you know if they make bolt extractors for a dremel.

I believe for the tranny to deliver such a blow that your carrier bearing bolts snap. You would've felt the tranny go. When my 5th gear went in my fwd drive it blew a hole through the diff. Also lifted the front end off the ground(I was doing 90km).

I know in a fwd if you break an axle or its not in. It will not move. However in awd cause the T-case does a 50/50 split the front might be able to move if it is still working.

Some one should be able to clarify more, I never really got into the driveline of an AWD just know its fun to have =] hope all works out for you mike.

FYI my car is a 1990 AWD, and as mentioned above, when 1 axle popped out the car stopped moving.

I was more so adding to the tranny blowing. You should know if it broke. Like I said never got into awd =] Sorry man.

LoL it's all good. You're right though, loose should spin... popped out - nat so mach (Borat voice).

Fix the driveshaft. Once it's fixed, if it isn't true AWD and you can spin the tires on a launch, change your VC. Changing the VC is easy.

What should I do, can I just get someone to weld the carrier bearing.

Is't the bearing mounted with some rubber gromets? There would probably be a lot of road noise and probably a lot of extra heat/friction if you just welded it solid.

Seems like the only problem is the loose axle. I turned my car on again today, and it went into 1st and reverse just fine. I can move the car forward and back just a bit, so I guess my transmission is fine. The only problem has got to be that damn carrier bearing that holds the axle.

I'm putting my car aside until I can find some time to remove the block and fix the broken bolts. I was planning to swap out the head anyways because of all the issues I keep having.
