These are some prices I've found for replacing or repairing the transmission and rear diff on a 5-speed, 1997 TSi AWD. All prices are quotations only, so don't hold the sellers to these prices.

(Mods, please move post if this section is not appropriate.)

Transmission
1) JDM unit from Japan Auto Parts, Toronto --> $1300 + tax (comment = might need to change the final drive before installing)
2) KW Mitsubishi replacement --> $4000 + tax (comment = dealer not sure if unit is new or rebuilt)
3) Pioneer Transmissions rebuild --> $2200 + tax (Bearings and seals only; Waterloo, Ont.)
4) TRE (Team Rip Engineering) Exchange --> CAD $1600 approx. + tax (Includes shipping and brokerage from Michigan; Stage 1 w/o options; 1.00 USD = 1.26 CAD)
5) Jacks Transmissions Exchange --> CAD $1500 approx. + tax (Includes shipping and brokerage from Colorado; Economy w/o options; 1.00 USD = 1.26 CAD)
6) Labour for swap only --> CAD $550 approx. (Pioneer; Point Zero)

Rear Diff Options
1) Replace bearings and seals; set backlash --> $1500 (Pioneer Transmissions, Waterloo)
2) Labour for swap only --> $500 (Pioneer Transmissions, Waterloo)

Hello.

I would personaly stay away from the JDM Tranny. Those are a hit and miss and you'll probably have to replace the final drive.

The Waterloo shop are probaby not expert at it so I would rather go for one of the Big shop. They are also overpricing the Rear Diff rebuild. Heck you cold buy a good used one for cheap. Lots are parting their 2G. Same for their labour.

Now, can I ask what is wrong with your Tranny???

Ghislain.

Hey Ghislain,

Yup, I originally thought the JDM was going to be the answer, but it quickly turned to crap once I started reading about the final drive issue.

I posted the price summary since I found it very hard trying to get all that info, plus other prices I found were a few years old.

My front diff has a ton of backlash and is just now beginning to clunk itermittently. The centre diff is probably not doing too well either. I'm going to do the TRE one, but I'm still undecided about the Stage 1 + 4-spider vs. the Stage 2 w/o 4-spider.

JDM is the way to go, just pick the right one tongue , bring a clutch disc with you and do the rotation test.

Maybe the prices went up in the last 2yrs, cause I got better JDM replacement quotes than that, which included the t-case.

Is TRE shipping to Canada now? The last time I checked they wouldn't.

You might think that a JDM is the way to go but one should remember that they are still a used Tranny and that you have no idea of it's condition.

For myself not even with a 10 foot pole...

I'd just watch for a parts car with a known good drivetrain and then go to town.

Yup, or buy the needed parts from a known source such as someone in here.
