Well today at work I just got word that thursday is my last day.

Which will leave me still with out wheels. Not to mention the complete lack of jobs around here.

Is there any towns in ontario hurting for people to work?

Only thing around here is call centers. I could go back. But I wanted to stay away from them.

I might have places to stay in missisauga and Peterborough. If need be.

Is anyone else's job in danger too?

This is another year I will probably have to put off the talon. Im wondering if I shouldnt take a chance on this off season and go back to school.

Bach! so stressed. I don't know if I am making sense right now.

I lost my job in January and I'm still looking. No one around here seems to be hiring.

I lost my job right before christmas. Being a Tool and Die maker aint quite like it was in my grandpas day. Ah well I took the opportunity to go back to school and do level 3. I think the best thing right now is to go back to school. There arent many jobs out there. I recently applied for a job and found out there were 300 applicants. It was a shitty paying job to.

The bright side is that the economy always bounces back. Its just that no one knows when.

Not to be rude or anything, but the economy is still doing fairly well here in Saskatchewan. There are still help wanted signs everywhere. I don't think it is really an option for most, but if anyone was concidering a move for the time being, perhaps looking this way might be an option.

My job isn't in Jeopardy... YET. We are SLOW as hell, our trailers haven't MOVED! Guy got laid off at our other shop today.

Yay.

I work as a mechanic tied to a company that hauls product to the mines in tanker trailers. The mines haven't been pouring (using) product, so we have a bunch of loaded trailers in the yard sitting there with nowhere to go. Makes things a bit worrysome for us at the shop.

It will pick up come spring.

Does anyone else feel as though the media is somewhat responsible for job loss and the economy? They've blasted it in our faces so much that even all the people with secure jobs get scared and stop spending money and the effects move down the line.

Our company is feeling the pinch as well with labour cutbacks last summer and layoffs over the winter (which I wasn't included in, luckily), but hopefully if the news scares people so bad they don't want to take trips anywhere they'll end up spending more time in their back yards and spend some money on some of our trees and shrubs.

Jay, why not look into the second career option? You collect EI and the government, depending on your situation can pay for a good portion or all of your education costs.

My aunt is a Bank Manager for Royal Bank. I said the same think Kevin, that the media is hyping this up bigger than it really is.

They're not.

The layoffs are real, the rollback in consumer spending is real. RRSP contribution is not there and it's a buyers market right now for Real Estate!

650 employees were laid off at a local mine (Xtrada) due to cutbacks. 30,000 are going to be laid off in the auto sector worldwide!

Yes, to an extent consumer spending has definitely been retarded, however the media is not fully responsible. I'm sure if you're a doctor or of some importance in the world, you spend spend spend as your job is probably secure. If you are in any trade right now, it's hit or miss whether or not your job is secure.

Sorry to hear Jay. You should sit down and think your situation over. Then decide whats best for you. Work or school at the time.

I agree. I've always said that the media(news) is making it worse. I'm not saying things are good, but they keep pumping fear into people which makes it worse.

But on the upside, I've been hearing commercials on the radio trying to boost peoples morale. Which is nice for a change.

Yeah I am still thinking about it. I have always wanted to get into a trade I was looking Tool and die or auto mechanics(just cause I can do it and my schooling marks are there to back up my auto path)

Only problem with trades is I know alot of people who have been laid off already cause theres no work. I don't want to go back for schooling now, if there is still no idea when this will be over. Idea of going through school and possibly being right back were I am now for a couple years bothers me.

I think I just need some time to think it over. Just a real big shock to. I have never been let go from a job. =[

The media reports it. Period. They don't make it worse than it really is, they just make it seem that way.

We, collectively as a society make it worse. Why? Because all we like hearing about is bad news. Nobody cares that Lulu the Panda gave birth to twins, but when Lulu is killed and skinned, it's Today's Top Story.

The term "what we don't know won't kill us" comes to mind here. If the media hadn't reported the economy was on a downslide, I'll bet dollars to donughts society would have just carried on our merry way and spend spend spend.

We as society are a bunch of hypochondriachs! We are told the economy is on a downslide, so we start acting as though the economy is on a downslide. We spend less, hoard more, tip toe around work listening to ALL the gossip just to subconciously settle ourselves in the hopes our job isn't at risk.

The edge has a couple ads about things not being nearly as bad as the news makes it seem. The government should invest a little money into things like that to keep people from freaking out.

Still %93 of canadians are employed and there are 1,000,000 more people working today than in 2004 according to them.

I hate the news, it disgusts me for the most part. Sensationalizing everything that doesn't need to be to make a buck. But that's just it, they're not around to help people, they're there to make money.

But anyway, I hope you find something soon Jay, good luck.

Brian, if I could have paid cash, I so would have. But I was 19, living on my own, working part-time, OSAP was all I could do.

It will help when Sam (GF) gets into a Police Force somewhere in Ontario. I would personally like to move to Guelph, that's where she really wants to get into.

Canada has been in denial about the whole recession thing from the get-go. The truth is that the cliff crumbled out from beneath everybody, and it's just taking some extra time to fall. For the past several decades, we were told that everything can only get better, and that 'they' had systems in place to prevent major losses from ever happening again...

The problem is that it's always someone else's problem until it hits home, and these things can take time to do that. The media may be over-sensationalizing things, but it's better than Harper and his cronies last year saying, "Canada is strong. We won't be affected." Local real estate agents are also trying to play this up, "Where is this recession? We're fine down here! BUY A BIG HOUSE! Let us sell yours for big money! Everything is business as usual!" Note that only THEY really stand to profit by this at the moment...

The core industries on this continent, and the World, have been DEEPLY affected by this. Like the Great Depression, this could last YEARS, not the few months they economists are trying to raise hopes by predicting. If a year or more ago they would have throttled things back and controlled it, there'd be little backlash. But they just surged on ahead, take take take, never thinking that you have to pay things back SOMETIME...

Jay I just saw an ad in the Northumberland News, this company (can't think of name right now) is hiring 72 millwright apprentices and or 1st and 2 year millwrights. They claim in their ad to pay all education costs etc.

I was thinking about going for it. However I am in IT and right now we don't have enough people at the air base to keep afloat and I am not worried about not having a job, its only slightly better than collecting EI in terms of earnings as I am working through a temp agency as a contractor. I'm going to try to stick it out and if I don't get permanent work I am going back to school part time for paramedic, the gf is a nurse I figure if we are in the same field we could have more to talk about I guess. Plus my buddy was making $36 an hour right out of college.

Another thing, out in Alberta oil has slowed down, but they are working on the things they've neglected so there is still lots of work in those areas, just not in Edmonton or Calgary. My brother is a lead electrician for SynCrude and he said the IT side is busy as ever there and also looking for tradesmen. The thing with IT as well there is always work if a company is expanding or shrinking the network has to follow suit, there was an increase in IT of 30,000 plus job in 08 alone.

I concur grant. Quite harsh. Thanks for the link I will definitely check it out.

Hmm Adam, I will have to look into that. Millwright is one of the trades that interests me. I haven't seen a company looking for millwright on the job bank or anything, nor heard of one. If you find the name out could you let me know. I will do some digging myself.

Just to comment on the "cheap real estate" comments, cheaper then exaggerated bubble highs maybe... but "cheap" I don't think so. Lets not forget the free market is based on what someone is willing to pay for something another party is prepared to sell. If the buyers are to poor / desolute / fear mongered to death by the media what is there from stopping housing prices from plummeting even further. I don't think we will see housing prices bottom outside of major metro areas for at least another year.

The job cuts are real... My opinion anyone working in any Natural Resource position in Canada, who has not already been laid off should be very concerned about losing their jobs. Oil, Natural gas, and basically all base metals are not worth producing at current market prices. The only thing worth producing is Gold and other precious metals as a means for individuals to protect themselves from the devil that is the USD greenback and its possible hyper inflationary future.

Bottom line nobody is safe, the problem is by the time the general public adapts to new situations its already changing face and the general public gets skewered like pigs. This is to continue with the planned wealth transfer from the middle class to the richest shylocks with all the power, effectively stripping the middle class out of the picture.

People will be so downtrotten that they will be willing to accept any proposed "change" that is spun as positive but will eventually bury us even further in debt and crisis. Rinse, Wash, Repeat.

Oh Snap, Jay I never meant that offensively. I've been looking for a second job up here and anyone who's hiring is minimum wage.. yada yada yada... sorry about that.

Vale Inco (Mines up here) started their first quarter, and it's not looking too good. More layoffs = Less product being hauled.

Yay.

Hmm.. I actually didn't see that as cynicism. It's a bang-on analysis in my book...

I looked into IT out West. Most of it has shifted to sub-contracting for the big companies, so instead of making $32 an hour or so working for SynCrude, you're making half that working for a company like ECS that has SynCrude's contract...
