You guys LOVE these threads, and so do I.

Let me all introduce you to Ian Burnside.

[Linked Image]

Now, let me introduce you to Ian's 1990 Mitsubishi Eclipse GSX.

[Linked Image]
[Linked Image]
[Linked Image]

And yes, this car has 62,000 original miles on it. Yes Miles.
[Linked Image]

And here's how it sat for the winter:
[Linked Image]

Throughout the next 12 hours or so, we're going to be doing a lot of work to this thing.

The goal right now: Strip the engine bay of EVERYTHING to get it ready for paint.

Stay tuned, subscribe to this one guys, it's going to get one hell of a transformation.

Ooop... he's here, with some Timmies. Time to get working! demon

This will be pretty cool to watch, very nice car.

Was it stored indoors for most of its life? At 20 years old and only 62k miles it probably did a lot of sitting.

Lets hear some history on it!

History:

Original owner imported from NJ, she brought it to Canada, sold it about a year or so after to a guy in Sudbury. He rarely drove it, it sat in a field for 7 years, then was purchased by some idiot here in Sudbury. he beat the hell out of it, then sold it to Ian. Ian's had it for 4 years, on the road for 2 months thanks to me.

Here's today's progress.

Here's what the engine bay looked like when we started:
[Linked Image]

So we started tearing into it:
[Linked Image]
[Linked Image]
[Linked Image]
[Linked Image]
[Linked Image]
[Linked Image]

Progress!!
[Linked Image]

Time to pull the motor:
[Linked Image]
[Linked Image]

And it's out... we're a little happy:

Beer break:

Pulled the tranny off:

Put the new motor stand together and motor on stand:

Food break:

And now we tore into the engine bay itself.

This is why we had to pull the motor:

So we brought the motor to the back deck and disassembled it:

The other motor there is from Bryan's N/T parts car:

So here's what my shop looks like now, with 2 cars worth of crap in it:

And last but not least..............................

That's the plan, and the reason why we pulled everything including the engine. It really came out a lot easier than I thought it would. The whole engine bay is being repainted and all the holes that aren't needed filled in. The motor is in pretty decent shape too, has kinda low compression in one cylinder.

So I went through the pictures, and I do realize some of them lack continuity. Oh well.

Wearing gloves is just smart and it will take alot less cleaning to make the install look sharp in the end. Its much easier to take off dirty gloves than it is to wash your hands to handle those clean parts, and even easier than washing those parts that where clean before your dirty hands got on them. Mech gloves or dirt bike glove work even better IMO.

Nice car Ian, its the bigger Brudder to my white 92' GSX, Ryan will vouch to that, to bad mine is coming off the road on Apr 24th weep or I would request a family photo shoot.

Keep up the nice work guys!, 1G's forever!

The gloves thing was just a 'manly' joke Malcolm. A semi-regularly wear gloves when wrenching on the car! tongue

Took long enough. I thought for sure someone would have said something sooner. "Nice clean car, except for the rusty fender".

My car came from Texas and it has zero rust and runs pretty dam good, so a part out would be out of the question.

To be honest I bought a house on the back roads, and it was either drive my eclipse every day or the 4-Runner, and I didn't want to use the car as my daily driver for work, but it is insured till the 24th so I'm getting my rides in well I can.

I have plans for a 2G tranny, new rear axles, drive shafts, cams, turbo and ex manifold, brakes, ect,.. so I will be keeping it forever.

Well, here's this weekend's progress. It's just about ready for paint.

What's left:

Mark holes to be kept and the rest to be filled in
Pull the heater core
Remove some of the subframe for powdercoat

Car goes to paint on a flatbed next week (4th).

Here's how the car sits now:

[Linked Image]
[Linked Image]
[Linked Image]
[Linked Image]

I was cutting out those POS Cowls out around the fog lights, the handle of my sissors broke. Out of frustration, I threw them towards the house.....

[Linked Image]

My Fiancée wasn't too pleased.....

So, next week while it's at paint, the plans are to go through the harness and start pulling wires we don't need. We're also going to be relocating the fuse box into the glove compartment, so shortening of the wires and extending the rest should be fun.

We've got a healthy sized box of parts to go to powdercoat as well, and we're also going to be tearing into the motor soon as well. It's got low compression, and we need to find out why.

This week is going to be a bit of a slow go as I'm going to be busy as hell. The following week we're going to try and get as much done as possible, and the week after, we're both on holidays to get the motor in and the car running.

"We tried, stripped bolt head at the bottom."

^^^ Perfect, now it will be easier to fill in after you grind the rest of the head off that bolt to remove the bracket, and if you think you need support there (which you don't) you could weld in a flat brace for FMIC clearance. Now is the time before paint.

Looking good guys well stripped, you won't here me say that again spy

We arent painting it ourselves, we have no supplies or a place to do it. Yet. It's going to a local bodyshop where theyll be doing just the engine bay painting now.The rest of the car is going to be done later on once all the big work is done just so that nothing gets scratched.

I think im going to have them blast the inside of each front fender and have something put on it that will prevent it from rusting. It looks as if they rust from the inside out and id better fix the other one now before it gets any worse.

And clean your damned camera already, that smudge is still there!!!!

I guess we can post a picture update of all the new parts going in eventually. The cheapest part is the one i was the most excited about.

You have 2 options to prevent rusting.

1- mildly blast the inside, clean it, spray Etch Primer and then gravel guard it or paint it.

2- mildly blast the inside, clean it, spray Epoxy Primer in the color of your choice and call it a day.

Either options will prevent rusting. Wish I was closer, could be helping quite a bit on the painting/body stuff smile

Don't be shy to ask any questions though.

Maybe we can enlist your services once it comes to painting the rest of the car. I'm sure we could do the engine bay ourselves but we dont have access or know how on metal work really. No welding machine or ever really a clue on how to fix the problem. The rest of the rust isnt even really rust, its just places where brackets were resting against the frame.

I guess it just looks alot worse than it really is, well atleast thats what im hoping.

We'll get a pic of all the parts going into the car tomorrow night. I'm in Belleville right now, so it should be interesting.

Ian, get pictures of the car being loaded up on the tow truck tonight! Get Corey's camera or yours, whatever.

For a quick fixer on surface rust or "bracket rust" you can use a product that's called Rust Inhibitor. Buy it at Crappy Tire or Napa. Clean the surface, spray the rust, it turns black and seals it, paint it. Works great...not better than properly treating it but it will stop the rust from coming back for quite a while.

Going, Going... GONE!

It's at paint right now! We'll be heading over there tomorrow night after work to get some pictures of the progress.

This week, it's motor and powdercoat time!

Working on it. More will come tomorrow. Got some pics at paint and some of the wire harness we're working on.

Lots of pictures will come this weekend and next week!

Edit: Ok, here's some pics at the paint booth.

The bay has been blasted, and it's going to be painted probably tomorrow after some final prep.
