I was reading some info on the web last week on upgrading turbos and someone was mentioning an 18G turbo...

I'm fairly new to DSMs and was wondering if anyone has actually used a 18G setup on their car.

What is this a turbo from, and how well does it perform?

I'm looking to build up around 400 - 450 whp.

Is this a good turbo to use, or should I choose something else more suitable to that hp figure.

Any info is much appreciated.

You probably haven't heard of an 18g because they aren't all that popular with dsm's. The guys that are running them seem to be happy with them but for your goal of 400-450 whp I think I would look at getting something abit larger. Not to say an 18g can make 400 whp, just it would be much easier with a 20g or 50 trim. The 18g is between the 16g & 20g. EvoIII16g flows ~550 cfm & I believe the 18g is ~600, then if you step up to a 20g your looking at ~700cfm+ depending on which model you get.

Edit: If you look at the above links, you can see the price jumps up a huge amount to get the larger TD06 turbine wheel, which would probably be a better choice for your goal. For that kind of money I think there are better choices out there. Alot of the 50 trims out there are under $1000 & have made some nice hp numbers. For a couple hundred more you could step up to an fp green, (is a 50 trim) bolt on and very proven turbo. I believe some guys are in the 10's with this turbo.

Ditto everything Daren said.

I'd say go for the EVO III 16g is you're budget conscious, or a 50 trim like the FP Green (or larger!) otherwise.

I have the FP Green and it rocks. If I was doing it all again I'd buy the same turbo. smile

I have a greddy 18G on my car. Much better for my car then the BIG 16G due to the fact that the 16G spools up too quickly and makes my FWD spin too much. Where the 18G is little lazier on the turbo leg and allows for better traction.
But if I had AWD I think I would perfer the 16G.
I am going to build an AWD this winter, but I will stick with the 18G just because I already have it.

Everythings new. Updates will be soon.

Thanks everyone for your info!!

Rob, those sites really helped.

Daren, thanks for all the info. I kinda figured the 18G was in between the 16G and 20G, and that's why it caught my attention. I really am trying to stick away from the 20G because I heard it's pretty laggy on bottom end. I'm mostly gonna be using the car for everyday driving and having fun every now and then on the track, so I want something that spools pretty decently.

I would definatley like to get some feedback from people running the 16G on what kind of numbers they're producing, and how their vehicle performs.

As well, anyone running a 18G I would like the same kind of info.

Thanks everyone for the info so far
