Recently broke a shifter linkage, Ive got a spare from my old car which began as an auto then made Manual. The cables I took out of that 91, have one adjustment just below the shifter boot in the car.
I have saved the shifter base that matches up with the cables I got from my old car.
My red car now, have two adjustments under the shifter boot, on the in car side.

Searching brought me to this:

Ah yes i forgot about the shifter and brackets. The shifter levers on a 90 tranny are different than a 91-94 as well. According to Jon Ripple @ TRE combining the 90 shift levers with the 91-up shifter assembly and cables creates a short shift setup. Off hand i can't remember what the difference is. I believe that the 90 arms are set up for a longer throw to compensate for the shorter throw on the shifter of a 90 where as the 91-up have a longer throw (or should i say the selector arm is longer there by creating a shorter throw). If you combine the longer selector arm of the 91-up setup, which includes the correct shift cables, with the longer shifter arms it will reduce the throw neccesary to move the shifter from gear to gear.

There is actually a couple old threads on this site about this setup. I also got this info straight from the horses mouth (Jon @ TRE).
Linky to info

Can someone just clarify this, Can I use the cables I have spare, or do I have to get a set of ones that are exact like my car.

All the original cables on the 1g's came with an adjustment on BOTH cables. Only the gear selector cable is the one that may need adjustment.

So if you buy brand new cables for a 91 to 94 awd dsm, you will notice only one of them is adjustable. New cables don't come with an adjustment on both. Its normal, you can use the cables you have as a spare, as long as they are from a 91+. When you pull them out you will notice they are the same length.

Also your car is a 91 so it already has a 91+ shifter base, so you don't need to bother changing it.

The difference b/w 90 and 91+ cables is about an inch.

Jon is right, without touching anything else on a 91+ car, running a 90 tranny will give you a nice short throw.

This is the way I am running my car right now, original shifter base, 91+ cables, all 91+ tranny shifter link brackets, and a 90 switchable trans, which has the shorter gear selector arm. Since a 91 plus car, has a longer cable for the gear selector, running a shorter arm(90 trans), will give you a short throw smile

So all else equal except for that shorter gear selector arm, you have a short throw, as the 91+ gear selector arm on the trans is longer.

The other arm, left/right is the same for all 90 to 94 dsm's.

This is the cables I have to use as replacements. I Was told Fiddy used a 1990 parts car to get all his parts for the manual swap ( I had his old car ). Does anyone have a spare set of cables that can be measured to see which they are?

I have the originals I broke last year, and a brand new set in my garage.

The originals have adjusters on both cables, the new set doesn't, but they are still the same length.

Bring your cables by and measure them.
